I look at myself in the mirror as I get ready to meet with Tenya to study. I look cute, sure, but I feel like something is missing. My hair is still in the twin braids I put them in after my shower, so I'll have nice waves when I take them out. Do I need makeup? I don't really wear makeup unless it's a special occasion. Is this a special occasion? Sure, it's a study date but is it a study date?
I groan. Let's give my outfit a once-over one more time. A simple white button up that I threw a plaid beige sweater vest over and a matching tennis skirt with the same pattern. My thermal tights are matched to my skin tone as much as I can get them to match pale as hell. I already have some thigh high boots that I can wear, and the more I look at myself, the more I like the twin braids. I just need to redo them since they're a little uneven and messy right now.
As I'm redoing my hair, I think about what else I could add to this. Another layer, maybe? It is supposed to be a little chilly today. I return to my closet to look through my blazers and coats. I hate how hard this is. Why am I putting so much effort into this? It's just studying.
I grab a simple beige coat and throw that on. I don't have time to fuss any more, I need to get the materials I need to study. The canvas bag Tenya gave me is my go to anytime I leave the house anymore, so I pile all of the workbooks and study guides we've been given into the bag along with about eight million pencils and highlighters in every color that exists. I double check to make sure my wallet is in my pocket, same as my phone and my keys.
Sending out a quick text to Tenya that I'm leaving my house, I pull on my boots and leave for the train station.
"Jade!" He's already sitting on a bench outside the cafe when I arrive. Seems he tried to dress up a little too. He's wearing a black button-up shirt and a cream-colored cable-knit sweater over it. He's paired it with some dark-colored slacks and his black church shoes.
"Hey!" Suddenly I'm more concerned that this could be an actual date. "You look nice."
"So do you."
My cheeks heat up. It's just a compliment, I don't need to go getting all flustered.
"Shall we go in, then?" He straightens out his sweater as he stands up. "I'm feeling a little peckish, should we order food before we begin studying?"
I nod, signaling him to lead the way. We find an empty booth in the corner away from everyone else and take our seats across from each other. The lighting in this cafe is low and warm, making it feel like a cozy evening rather than a dull gray morning. Smooth, relaxing jazz and city pop flow through the speakers. It's beautiful in here. A waiter arrives to take our order. Tenya orders a green tea and a small bowl of beef stew. I ask for a spiced apple cider and some French toast with strawberries.
Our drinks arrive almost immediately. I make my hand cold enough to hold my cup and cool my drink down a little bit before I take a sip.
"Shall we begin then?" Tenya pulls out the study guides. I do the same.
"What are we starting with?"
"Does math sound good?"
"Sure."
We get to work, working out equations and comparing our answers. As Tenya explains the steps I need to take to get the right answer, the gentle tone in his voice makes it so much easier to comprehend than when Ectoplasm taught it to us. So this isn't hard, Ectoplasm just sucks at explaining things.
The math study guide gets finished pretty quickly once I know what I'm doing. Tenya's already finished his a few minutes before I get mine done. We compare our answers. Perfect matches.
