I love the rain. Even if I have to walk with an umbrella and my raincoat to keep my uniform as dry as possible, breathing in that clear rainy air reinvigorates my lungs. Every once in a while, the wind pushes a raindrop in my face and I can't help but smile, even as I flinch at the cold sensation.
As I shake my umbrella out in front of the school, I think about Tenya. Will he be here today? I wouldn't blame him if he wasn't.
At my locker, I switch out my wet shoes for my nice, dry school shoes and shove my raincoat in there as well. I think I can hear Tenya and Midoriya. So Tenya did come today. He sounds chipper.
I hang back until Tenya finishes his conversation with Midoriya before approaching.
"Oh, Jade! Hello!" He grins when he sees me. His smile looks a little forced. "I was hoping I'd see you this morning!"
"You were?" This takes me by surprise. Why would he be hoping to see me?
"Yes, of course!" He reaches into his bag. "I wanted to thank you for visiting me this weekend and ... and the meal you made."
"You don't have to do that."
"Jade. Yes I do." He gives me a package wrapped neatly in aluminum foil. I can smell a hint of red bean paste and the foil is still warm. "It's not much, but I figured you might like it. Thankfully my bag kept it safe from the rain."
I unwrap it carefully, smiling as I see that he's given me two pieces of taiyaki. The beautiful fish-shaped pastries have quickly become a favorite snack of mine, especially with the red bean filling, though the chocolate filling also has a special place in my heart. I wrap the treat back in the foil and put it in my bag to eat later. "I love taiyaki. Thank you very much, Tenya."
He looks visibly relieved. "There's a vendor that sells them on my route to school and I thought of you when I saw them."
"You're so sweet, Tenya." I grab his hand.
"Walk to class with me?" He looks at our intertwined fingers and smiles softly. This one is genuine.
"Of course."
He gently pulls me along with him to our homeroom. A few students stare at us as we pass, no doubt thinking about what Aizawa said about Tenya and I at the Sports Festival. We pay them no mind.
"Hey, Tenya!" Uraraka runs up to us when we walk in. "How are you feeling?"
"I'm quite alright, Uraraka." Tenya says, giving my hand a squeeze. "Thank you for asking."
"I feel kind of like a celebrity." Uraraka rubs the back of her neck. "So many people recognized me on my walk over here, it was kind of freaky. Jade, did you get that too?"
"Yeah, a few people." I say. "I mostly kept my head down though, I don't really like being the center of attention."
"I think it's fun sometimes, but not when I'm trying to get to school, you know?" She glances at my hand, which is still intertwined with Tenya's, and gives me an excited look. "You two seem closer than usual."
I'm sure I light up like Rudolph's nose. Tenya looks at me, flushing as well. Am I supposed to say something about this? What do I say?
"Of course Jade and I are close." Tenya speaks for me. "She came to visit my brother and I in the hospital and she was kind enough to make my favorite food for me."
Uraraka looks like she's about to burst with happiness. I never should have told her about my crush, though if I get red every time someone even vaguely mentions it, it's probably pretty obvious anyways. "Aw, that's really sweet!" She gushes.
