The First Date

As I finish brushing out my hair, I take in my outfit in the mirror. I need this to be perfect. Denki helped me choose a beige cable-knit sweater dress. The somewhat deep v-neck shows more than a little cleavage, but I think it should be fine. I have my staple tights and some thigh-high suede boots. It's all very monochrome, so I throw on a white trench coat to add some variety. I hope this is good enough.

My heart pounds in my ears. My first date! I can't wait, but I also feel like throwing up if I think about it too hard. I mean, I already spent the night in his arms twice, so I know for sure he likes me. It's just that it's becoming more official today.

I hear my phone buzz loudly against my dresser and run over to check it. Tenya texted me.

"Good morning, Jade! I hope I'm not interrupting anything, but I'm very excited for our date today! I can't wait to see you."

I sit on my bed with a stupid grin as I type out a response. "Good morning, Tenya! I'm just finishing up getting ready, so you're all good! I can't wait either."

"When are you thinking of leaving?"

"In a few minutes."

"That's perfect. I'll see you soon."

"See you then."

I give myself a quick spritz of perfume before throwing my phone and some mints into my bag. He doesn't seem like the type to kiss on the first date, but I still want to be prepared.

When I reach the train station, I text him that I'm on my way. He replies, but I'm suddenly too nervous to read it. I just get on my train and try to hold myself together. This is going to be fine. I know it will be.

"Jade!" He waves to me as I exit the station. He looks so good. He's wearing a light blue button up, and he's thrown a slate gray sweater over it and paired it with his signature khakis and loafers. His hair is neatly combed back and out of his face.

"Tenya, hey!" I run up to him.

He tucks a hair behind my ear. "You look breathtaking."

"Me? What about you?"

"I tried to dress up a little. It's a special occasion."

I flush. "I like it."

"Shall we, then?" He offers his arm to me.

I take it without hesitation.

"You really like that canvas bag I gave you, huh?" He takes it from me. "I might have another you could have if you're interested."

"I'd be okay with that." I feel my heart in my throat. There's no reason to be nervous. I know that we're going to have fun. "I use this one literally every time I leave the house. It might be nice to have some more."

"Remind me about it later, I'll make sure to get it to you."

Tenya leads me over a small bridge to a little island in the middle of the park. Swans are swimming in the surrounding pond. One lone tree stands in the center, branches hanging over us like a tiny umbrella. I marvel at the rocks and the sound of water running over them. It's like something out of a fairy tale.

"Tenya, it's gorgeous!" I gasp as a small flower falls into my hair.

He plucks it out for me. "I thought you might like it."

"I love it. It's like a fairy tale."

"That's why I chose this spot. You almost forget you're in a park out here." Tenya spreads a blanket out on the ground and takes a seat. He helps me sit down too. "I don't really have a lot of knowledge about what the best picnic food is, so I just packed some fresh fruit and stopped by a fast food restaurant on the way here."
