Chapter 28

You are a hunter. A creature of the night.

Everywhere your pawprints press into the moss-green soil is territory you own.

You run between the tall dark green trees with all the freedom that comes with being the world's most feared creature.

You are happy. You are not alone.

He runs with you; identical in strength, size, and colour. The two of you own this forest.

The two of you survive together in this cursed world.

That is how it should've been. Until the day the both of you grew tired of hunting in this world and moved on to the next.

That is not how it was.

He came. That day when the trees parted in a flash of dark light. A man of magic. He came to take. You sensed it. You sensed a creature similar to yourself. A hunter. But unlike you who hunted purely for survival, he hunted for pleasure.

You did your best to fight him off, but take he did.

You watched as he took him away. Your brother, your twin, your partner in this cursed life.

And as you watched, helpless, you vowed to take revenge on every human that crossed your path.

Bright. So bright.

You see it. The one human who can help you. Who can reunite you with your brother. You'll follow her. You'll have her free your brother the way she freed you. And then the two of you will roam again together, this time on a path of light.

You come to in a bubble of golden light.

The vision slips off the edges of your consciousness.

Warmth surrounds you, like you are being held by the sun.

A bubbly, tingly feeling pulses throughout your body. A natural smile finds home on your lips. You feel good.

A sensation, you realize, as your awareness returns to you, you've known before.

The inklings of an old curse. The promises of a new friend.

You open your eyes.

And scream.

You're back at the BnB, and the predatory eyes that were hunting you down just moments ago are staring right at you.

The tiger's long body is sprawled along the bed, her large paws dangerously close to your vital organs.

Besides her eyes—bright and piercing—she looks completely transformed. Her previously green fur is now a brilliant shade of orange-gold. Her stripes white and ethereal. Her expression kind. Her wide jaw stretched into a somewhat smile. Her pink tongue licks her lips in self-satisfaction.

You reach out to pet her head, your hand traveling the distance at a cautious pace. "That's right," you say. "I forgot about this."

As your hand makes contact with her soft cashmere fur, you feel a spark of charged energy that travels up your arm.

The great creature nuzzles her head into your touch, the golden light radiating off of her, filling your bones, giving you strength.

You find yourself relaxing a bit. You sense none of the murderous intent that you did before. Instead, the energy that fills you is nothing but pure love and appreciation.

You feel lightheaded but buzzing with awareness at the same time.

"So you're a girl, eh?" you say.

Your new companion looks up at you with kind orange eyes that are way too intelligent for her species.
