Chapter 35
He's... he's been looking for me? Kazan's words bring a shiver of clarity up your body. You sit upright and fix your disheveled hair and clothes.
Maybe you're hallucinating, but he really did save you.
Nakamoto lies unmoving on the floor from when he'd struck him to save you, and now a different type of fear fills your limbs.
"What do you mean you've been looking for me?" you say.
Kazan, the curse-man, is still bouncing on his heels and leaning really close to you. His aura leaks danger all over the room. You feel unsteady, looking at his twinkling eyes, and wondering if his canines will turn into an enemy and attempt to bite.
"Just as I said," he continued. "I don't like being a curse. People are scared of me everywhere. I want to be human. And you're the girl who can do that for me."
"I... I don't know what you're talking about. I don't, I can't—" Suddenly you remember Samara. You turn to see where your tiger companion was thrown against the wall. Her body lies still on the floor.
"Samara," you breathe.
Your limbs are heavy as you make your way over to her. You feel her soft fur and almost collapse as you feel the rise and fall of her chest.
"I'm so sorry," you whisper. You collapse into tears.
"She's still breathing, ma'am," Kazan says, intimately close in your ear.
You jolt upright. Again, your curse-saviour has placed himself inside your space bubble. If it weren't for your concern and Samara's condition, you'd probably shove him back.
"She's still breathing," he says again. "So can't you do that healing thing?"
You blink. "Y-you're right!" You can't believe you had almost forgotten about your main ability.
The encounter with Nakamoto and now this curse had really shaken you to your core.
You steady your hands and place them over Samara, mindfully aware of how Kazan leans in even closer.
"Some space, please," you mutter.
Kazan does actually lean back a bit, and you allow your heart energy to flow down your arms and over Samara's body. You watch as her fur flickers in response, then close your eyes to channel a deeper force.
Eventually, you feel her energy responding, and in your connected aura you feel her eyes opening.
You open your own eyes only to be hit with a splash of tiger saliva as Samara swipes her tongue over your face.
"Samara!" you squeal. You embrace her—hugging her warm fur and allowing her purring to bring your heart rate back to normal.
She gives a shake of her body and stretches her large paws.
"Thank god you're okay," you say. You pet her back, her head, her chest.
Then you realize Kazan is a breath away and watching you way too closely. "That was magical, dear princess," he says.
You almost fall off your heels.
You steady yourself then regard the man properly.
If you hadn't already met a curse who took on the form of an actual volcano, you would say Kazan's body reminded you of one; with the solidness of his muscles and the sinews running up and down his body.
"Kazan, right?" you say, swallowing. "Thank you for your help. I mean it. We would have been in trouble if you didn't step in. But I'm not exactly sure if I'm the person you're looking for."
"You are, missus!" he says, his nose almost colliding with yours.
You lean back.
Samara growls beside you.
"You are," he says. "Your power is the only one that can turn me into a human. I wasn't sure if it was possible before, but now that I've met you, I know! You're the one that will make me human!"
You stare into his twinkling golden eyes. His sincerity makes you hold back a grumble of annoyance. "I'm not sure what you're talking about." You look back at Samara. Her golden aura is the result of you using your gift on her, but that doesn't mean a curse could be turned into a human. If anything, he would just be another love slave.
Kazan's black heart swirls. If you allow yourself to stare, you'll be pulled into it, until the pulse of red life tempts you. "I, I probably could do something," you say. "But it wouldn't be what you want. And I wouldn't recommend it. I can't make you human. You should find someone else."
You regret the harshness of your words the moment they're out. Realizing how strong this Kazan probably is, and how he could probably easily turn against you. But dating Gojo has done some damage to your ability to sense danger. And even more to your ability to people-please.
When you open your eyes, Kazan is not even listening. He has hopped across the room and is standing next to Nakamoto's body.
He kicks the fallen special-grade sorcerer with his boot. "This guy won't be this sleepy for much longer," he says. "We should get out of here, miss princess and tiger."
You sigh.
Slowly, you steady yourself to your feet. You realize you have one job now: getting back to the school so you can be there when Gojo returns. You've already messed up enough. It was a miracle you were safe. And your loving boyfriend would no doubt cuss you out for attempting to follow him. You'd have to trust him to do what he needed to do and wait patiently.
But what about this guy...
"Not to worry, missus!" Kazan says, jumping across the room and getting in your face once again. "About your abilities, that is. It's okay if you don't know how right now," he says. "I'm happy to wait around until you figure it out. I've been waiting a long time, you see."
This time you do push him off. You make sure Samara is still by your side, then you begin to walk.
Kazan's gold eyes are making you deeply miss your pair of blues.
"Let's go, Samara," you say. You turn to Kazan, who is no doubt resolved to follow you. "I can't help you right now. But if the day does come, when I can.. figure out how to turn a curse into a human. If that day comes. Then I'll help you."
"That's great, missus!" Kazan says, beaming. "That's all right and well!"
A mixture of concern and doubt begins to churn somewhere deep in your heart. You remember the words Nakamoto said before he almost killed you—
Heart energy. It was even stronger than cursed. And it was meant to be used by everybody.
Kazan keeps on following you. You know you'll have to figure out a way to ditch him before you get back to the school. And definitely before you run into your sorcerer boyfriend. You can't even imagine how they'd clash.
For now, there are too many thoughts running through your head.
What if this turned into something bigger than you?
What if it already was?
