Every day was the same since you became a maid in his household, Lord Cutler Beckett. No, he would never let you forget that he was a lord, or else you were given more cleaning to do. The once, when you called him 'Beckett' he spilt his coffee all over a newly laid white carpet, his foot pressed against your back as you kneeled to clean it. What had happened to him?

You were the same age and had known each other since school. Times had changed far better for him, than they had for you. When he was younger, you fell in love with everything about him. He was so polite, courteous, unselfish, had an abundance of love and care for other people, mindful in speech, compassionate and the list could go on and on.

You had hoped one day that you'd meet him again... in more favourable circumstances. Now, you were in his office, tidying away paperwork. On the desk was a sheet with a list of peoples names, or cargo. List and lists, big number of things being transported, many of them all recorded on different dates. Your eyes betrayed you, continuing to scan through them.

"What are you doing?" one of the head maids asked, her hand residing on her hips.

"Nothing, nothing at all,"

"I'm going to pretend I didn't see that."

She exited the room, and you continued cleaning away so as not to get in trouble. Beckett soon returned, sitting at his desk, writing as you continued cleaning. You wished he'd play some music, allow you to sing and dance while you cleaned. Even hum. But, the strict rules were there for a reason. Maybe they weren't, maybe it was just for his own fun and enjoyment, to see everyone suffer like he was doing.

"Something on your mind?"

"No."

You continued cleaning until the lead maid entered and excused you. In the room, she gave Beckett a rundown of everything that had been completed throughout the entirety of the house, which she did on a daily basis.

"I'm going to ask you a question, what is wrong with that woman?"

"Oh, sir. I think she's concerned with her health,"

"Don't lie to me," he propped his feet on the desk, drumming his finger on his thigh impatiently. "I'll sack you and hire someone else. Plenty of people like you to go around, and someone else won't pay so well."

"When she cleaned your desk, she sighted some documents. I'm not sure what they are about, you'll have to ask her what she saw,"

"I'll have to, she needs to be taught a lesson,"

"Sir," he waited attentively. "Don't go too hard on her, she lost her father a few days ago."

"I never asked, but thank you. You are excused."

With that she left the room, he shouted your name, and you entered upon immediate instruction, your hands clasped in front of you, your head bowed as if in shame.

"Raise your head," you did as he said. "What have you been doing in my office?"

"Cleaning,"

"What have you seen in my office?"

"Nothing,"

"Please be more elaborate,"

"I've seen nothing," you locked eyes with him and stared with hollow eyes. "You don't believe me."

"No, not from what I've just heard from the head maid,"

"Snitch," you mumbled under your breathe.

"What was that?"

"Its a French word... I learned it awhile ago,"

"Back at school? Yes, I remember you. Don't look too surprised,"

"I wasn't surprised," you responded in an aggressive tone demonstrating how you felt.

"I know what you've seen,"

"Do I have permission to speak freely? Or, is this a case where I'm to remain silent?"

"More and more words. Well done, and no. I don't want to hear your opinion,"

"I asked out of courtesy, and I'm going to give it to you anyway,"

"No, Y/N, you won't,"

"Or else, what? You'll sack me?"

"You've for the same mouth on you that you've always had,"

"I know. What happened to the Beckett I used to know? The one who cared about people. Now you treat them like they are cargo, animals, food, something to be used and abused. I don't appreciate you treating me like that too, I deserve to be treated like a human. You've gotten stone cold just like your father was, and no wonder. Look at you, you think you're something!"

He got up from his chair, smacking you across the face. A handprint was remaining on your face, you held it in your own hand. Beckett just stared down at his own hand, regretting instantly what he did.

"I quit!" you shouted.

"You don't quit! I fire you, you don't get to choose. I'm still the same person I was before, I just have to be this way or else I don't live like this,"

"You make money from other peoples misery? You're so sick in the head and twisted, don't be fooled. Because, I am not."

You exited the room, ran down the hall and burst through the front doors in complete anger. He called after you, but you didn't return. This was no way for you to live.
