Once the sun rose, I moved Sofia's sign to a nearby car, as well as some empty cans to show her group we'd been here. I scratched an arrow into the cars hood of the direction we were leaving in too, just to be on the safe side. After making sure we had everything, I drove off, hoping we'd find some kind of sign of her group and mother on the way.
I had been driving for at least a few hours when a sign and dirt road caught my eye, so I stopped the car in front of it.
"Why did we stop?" Sofia asked from besides me. I had let her sit in the front. I pointed out the window to the sign, it read 'Greene's Farm.'
"Think your group may have gone there?"
Sofia tried to peer through my window and nodded.
"Probably...we were looking for somewhere to stay..
I nodded.
"Alright, it's worth a shot."I took the turn off the highway and drove down the dirt road to the farm. It winded partly through the woods for a few minutes, till it opened up to a clearing where the farm actually was. There were huge fields, a big barn, stables and a big white farmhouse ahead. It looked quiet, untouched...at least from afar. If her group wasn't here, at the very least it seemed safe, or perhaps we'd find some food here... Either way, it was worth checking out.
I continued to drive up the road and pulled up just in front of the gates leading into the houses front yard, since as we got closer, I noticed that some vehicles were parked outside and well, it didn't hurt to be cautious...
I scouted the area carefully, and the cars weren't the only thing that were outside. There were a few people too, most of them huddled around a car's hood, seemingly arguing, but a few others were slightly further away, doing other things.
Their group seemed quite large from what I could see...
I turned the engine off and got out the car, throwing my bow over my shoulder, before walking over to the passenger side to let Sofia out, then I helped her get onto my back.
I wasn't too sure if taking her was a good idea, but if something happened to me and I left her there, that wouldn't be a good thing either, so I opted to just keep her close. Besides, there was a small chance this could be her group and I'd need her to recognise them for me if that were the case...
I peered over the fence and took a deep breath.
"Recognise any of them, Sofia?"
I felt her head shake and I felt a pit drop in my stomach.
"Not from here, but...that rv, it looks like Mr Dale's." She answered, and pointed to the old camper parked up against a fence.
I looked to her from over my shoulder.
"Is he part of your group?"
I felt her nod.
I let out a deep sigh.
"Alright, then...Let's go see if your mom's here..." I breathed, opening the gate and walking towards the group of people.
"I hope they are..." She said softly.
I nodded and let out a deep breath.
"I hope so too, Sofia..."As I got closer, I noticed that the group by the car were all men, and they were heavily armed, which caused me to hold Sofia a bit tighter. I made sure to continue on with a little more caution as I walked a bit closer, but after a few steps, a man in a cop's uniform noticed me and held his hand up, whilst his other rested on his holstered gun.
He gave me a stern look as he scanned me over.
"Stop, there. Who are you?" He asked. The others beside him instantly followed his gaze when they heard him call out and raised their weapons when they noticed me.
A bald man stepped forward with a fierce look on his face and his shotgun aimed in my direction.
"Raise your hands." He demanded.
I gave a dry laugh.
"Friendly bunch.." I mumbled to myself.
I sighed and nodded to my back.
"I can't exactly do that...my hands are full." I answered.
I kept my distance from them, but I didn't back off either.
"I don't suppose you've-"
A man with a crossbow stepped forward with a foul look on his face as he propped his leg up on a rock and raised his crossbow to me.
"Raise your hands, or get a damn arrow in ya' brain." He spat with a southern accent that made his words drawl.
