The group ran across the field, chasing Shane, to where Rick, Hershel and Jimmy were luring the walkers...The barn...
Shane kicked open the fence and bolted closer to Rick.
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING, MAN!?" He yelled.
Rick commanded over his shoulder as he wrestled the walked he was holding on to.
"Shane, just back off."
Hershel glanced at us, the walker on the end of his pole swaying and growling.
"Why do your people have guns?"
Shane glared at him.
"Never you mind why we have guns. Question is, why do you have walkers!?"Shane circled around the three of them, pointing his finger accusingly as he looked back to the rest of us.
"Are you kidding me!? Do you see this!? Do you see what they're holding onto?"It was almost as if he was trying to prove something to the group...but really, I knew he was just trying to prove something to himself...
That he was the better leader...
Hershel kept his eyes on Shane as he and Rick herded the two walkers to the barn.
Hershel argued back at Shane.
"I see who I'm holding onto!"It was the first time I had heard him raise his voice.
The usual calm and kind old man who minded his own buisness, was now angry and not tolerating Shane's outburst.
Shane continued to circle them as they tried to guide the walkers, pacing around them in anger and frustration.
"No, man. You don't." He argued.
"Shane, just let us do this, then we can talk!" Rick bartered.
Shane's voice seemed to elevate.
"What do you want to talk about, Rick!?"All of us were now following Rick, Hershel and Shane along to the barn. Some of us tried to get Shane to stop making such a fuss, but he wouldn't listen. Not that there were a lot of us trying to stop him...most of the group agreed with him...
Shane began to go off on a tangent.
"These things ain't sick. They're not people! They're dead! Ain't got to feel anything for them because all they do, is kill! These things right here!? They're the things that killed Amy! They killed Otis! They chased and almost killed Sofia!"
He looked towards the group, his chest puffed out like he couldn't possibly be in the wrong.
"And they'll kill all of us if we don't do something!"Rick's face twisted in frustration, still trying to wrestle the walker on the end of his pole, but the arguing was provoking it, and Rick could've exactly just ignore Shane.
Rick spared Shane a single, frustrated glance as he yelled an order for him to stop over his shoulder.
"Shane, shut up!"
He gritted his teeth as he herded the walker forward.
"This is not your call!"Shane walked in front of Hershel, but was still a few feet away when he stopped.
"Hey, Hershel. Let me ask you something...Does a living, breathing, person, do they walk away from this?"Without hesitation, Shane instantly got his gun out and shot the walker once in the stomach and three times in the chest, catching everyone off guard.
Seeing the terrified and mad look on Hershel's face broke me a little. I didn't know this man, but to him, these walkers were people...his family. To him, Shane shooting them was no better than killing someone right in front of his eyes.
Now, I didn't agree with Hershel, but I understood both the pain and the hope he held. It was misguided, but he was trying. Hell, we all were. If the circumstances were different, maybe Shane would feel the same as him. We probably all would.
