We walked a bit further into the woods, looking for any animals to hunt and take back to camp for dinner. Daryl stopped in his tracks and whistled, beckoning me over to him.
"Look 'ere, we got ourselves some venison." He said, pointing to the floor.
I stood next to him and looked at where he pointed.
"What am I looking at?"
He clicked his tongue.
"The tracks."
I squinted my eyes and crouched down to the floor, rummaging through the leaves.
Daryl yanked my arm.
"Don't mess with it!"
I blinked, looking to him blankly, then back to the floor.
"Ohhh. The twigs are broken and the leaves have dents in..."
Daryl sighed.
"Teachin' you's gon' be a nightmare."I stood from the ground and rested his crossbow on my shoulder and smirked at him.
"Well, I wouldn't ask you to teach me if I knew how to track now, would I?"
He grunted.
"Snarky bitch."
I elbowed him and nodded to the ground.
"What's next, Asshole?"
He rolled his eyes.
"First off, don't mess the tracks." He lectured.
"Alright, lesson learned. Now?"
He looked at me like I was stupid.
"You follow it."
"Daryl, I could barely see that. What do you want me to follow?"
"The track."
I scoffed and hit his arm.Daryl smirked at me, then walked behind me, placing his hands on my shoulders. I felt his head peek over my shoulder and his breath on my neck as he spoke. It was kind of comforting...I felt...safe.
"Since yer so shit, I'll help ye."
I scoffed and he chuckled, pointing his hand to the ground.
"Look, carefully. Ye saw the snapped twigs and leaves, yea'?"
"Yesss..?"
"Where does it lead?"
I turned my head to look at him behind me.
"Come on, I'm not an expert like, you. I'm practically blind."
He chuckled and turned my head back to the ground gently.
"Focus."I narrowed my eyes and focused on the ground. Everything looked the same to me, it all blended together. I stared a little harder and noticed that there was a trail of dented and snapped twigs. I slowly walked away from Daryl and followed the trail, him following behind me. I aimed Daryl's crossbow at the ground, looking at the tracks through the scope.
I decided to spark up a conversation whilst we were tracking.
"Did Rick tell you about, Randall?"
"What bout' im'?"
I ducked under some shrubbery and heard Daryl cut it down behind me.
"He's letting him go. Taking him out to a nearby town"
Daryl grunted.
"Stupid idea if ye ask me. Tha' old man suggest it?"
"No, I did. They kept arguing and couldn't agree on something, so I suggested that."
Daryl scoffed and clicked his tongue.
"Damn broken group. Can't decide on nothin' no more."I turned and looked at him from over my shoulder.
"Broken?"
"Ye ain't dumb. I know yer noticed. All the arguin', Shane and Rick fightin' all the time. Group ain't got a leader."
I nodded and pushed a branch out my path.
"Glenn told me they were friends, right? What happened?"
"Hell as if I know. Don't care neither. Ain't none of my damn business."
"It is. You're part of the group. If they fight it'll affect everyone, including you."
"Then they can sort their shit out. Ain't got nothin' t' do with me."
I sighed.
"You really are stubborn, Dixon."
He nodded and pointed forward.
"And yer nosy. Focus on trackin'."After a few moments, I came to a stop and held my hand up, signaling Daryl to stop. The deer we were hunting was stood in front of us.
Daryl pat my shoulder.
"Nice one. Didn't think yer would actually manage to track it."
I hummed and smirked, raising his crossbow.
"I'm full of surprises like that."
"Ye even know how to shoot tha'?"
I smirked and look down the sights and hummed.I aimed for the deer, but noticed two walkers approaching it. If I killed the walkers first, I'd have to kill the deer fast, as the sounds would startle it. If I killed the deer first, I'd have to kill the walkers fast, so they didn't taint the meat.
"Watch and learn, Dixon" I smirked.
I quickly shot the dear, dead in the heart. The walkers quickly approached the deers corpse, Daryl was about to run in and kill them, but I held out my arm, stopping him. I reloaded the crossbow and shot the closest one in the head, then quickly did the same with the other.
I turned to Daryl and blew a stray strand of hair out of my face, handing him his crossbow back, dangling it from my fingers, with a smirk on my face.
"In fact, I think can shoot it better than you."
He snatched his crossbow back with a grunt.
"I doubt that."
"Mmm, the bodies beg to differ." I sang.
"Beginners luck."
"Who said I've never shot a crossbow before?"
He grunted and I chuckled, nudging him.
"You're just jealous I was a good shot."
He scoffed.
"Who the hell would be jealous of you?"
"A Dixon."
He rolled his eyes.
"You wish"He walked over to the deer and picked it up, slinging it over his back. He walked back over to me, walking past me and to the farm.
"Com'on, we gotta get this back to camp."
I walked beside him and tried taking the crossbow back.
"I can carry the crossbow, deer must be heavy"
He swatted me away.
"I've got it. Don't need no girls help. An' definitely not yours."
I scoffed.
"Suit yourself. I still caught it"
He turned to me and smirked.
"But will ye skin it?"I almost choked on my own spit and began to cough. I turned and looked at him, seeing him smirking at me.
"Skin it?" I repeated.
He chuckled and nudged me.
"What's wrong, princess? Afraid to get your hands dirty?"
"I..no! I just...I didn't know we were skinning it."
"Ye really are from the city, huh? Never had to hunt in yer life, have ye?"
"No?"
He rolled his eyes and smiled.
"Gotta skin it before ye eat it. Can't eat the fur. Pelt will make a good blanket, though"
"Seriously!?"
"Whas' wrong? Thought ye were a tough bitch. Can't stomach it?"
I scoffed and rolled up my sleeves.
"Oh, game on, Dixon. Game, fucking on!"He smirked and chuckled, nudging me with his shoulders as we walked.
"Bet you'll squirm"
I scoffed and nudged him back.
"Will not"
"Ye will"
"I won't"
"Will"
"Won't"
"Will"
"Won't"
"Will"
"Won't"
"Will"I stormed in front of him and pointed a finger at him, a challenging grin on my face.
"Bet!"
He adjusted his stance and smirked.
"Ight'. If ye puke whilst doin' it, ye gotta take over ma' guard duties."
I nodded and smirked.
"And if I don't, which I won't, you have to involve yourself in the group more."
He groaned but nodded his head.
"Sure, not like yer'll be winnin' anyway."
"Don't forget you lost our first bet, Dixon. You're losing against me right now."
He scoffed and walked past me.
"You ain't winnin' this time."
"We'll see about that."
He hummed and chuckled.
"We sure will."We walked back to the farm fairly easily. I killed a few walkers on the way back, since Daryl had his arms full, but luckily there wasn't too many to get rid of and we had a relatively peaceful trip, if you minused our bickering that is. All in all, our little hunting trip was pretty successful, plus, I got a tracking lesson out of it.
