I stayed up all night thinking about Dale's advice, I mean, I had to stay up anyway, since I was on watch but, it's not like I would've been able to sleep even if I tried.
Glenn and Maggie came back a fair few hours after dusk, unharmed, thankfully.
I didn't go to see them, I just watched them enter from the tower. Since they were expected to come back after dark, most of the group was still up to welcome them back, minus the kids that is.
Shortly after they returned, Glenn came up to see me, but he didn't stay long, not because he didn't want to, but because I told him to. He had just been out dealing with business and he needed some rest, I didn't want him staying up with me all night.
So he told me what happened at Woodbury, then reluctantly left me be. Well, when I say reluctantly, I mean I had to kick him out or he wouldn't have left at all.
Luckily, he came back with good news. The two siblings that him and Maggie had gone to speak to had agreed with our deal. Turns out my guess was right. They didn't want war. So they were willing to surrender and leave. They had agreed to inform other residents of Woodbury of our plan to surrender themselves in exchange for safety as well.
As a show of trust, supposedly, the two siblings also introduced themselves to Glenn and Maggie. Sasha and Tyrese. That was their names.
I let out a deep breath as I looked to the stars, my warm breath blowing soft clouds into the cold night air.
I was relieved that they agreed. I wasn't entirely sure it would work, it was just our best shot. But it worked...for now. Now all we had to do was get the residents out and pray they don't betray us. Once that's all done...we're home free.
As I looked to the stars, I thought of praying for this plan to work, for everything to turn out alright, but praying wouldn't do anything. It was pointless, other than perhaps giving you a little bit of hope. If you wanted something to happen, you had to make it happen with your own hands.
No good would come of praying, so I'll take things into my own hands.
I'll make sure everything turns out okay the best I can.
I looked to the brightest star and closed my eyes, remembering something my mom had told me a long time ago, as she cradled me in her arms.
"What's meant to be, will be and what won't, will not. Don't fret over the past or the future, what is meant to happen, will happen."
I smiled sadly and opened my eyes again. I remember what I said to her after that too.
"That's dumb. So we can't change anything? It's just going to happen no matter what?"
I remember she smiled at me so sweetly when she looked at me and said;
"Of course you can change it. You just have to have the will to."
Then she repeated what she had said before.
"What's meant to be, will be and what won't, will not."
I never did understand what she meant back then...but...who knew it would bring me such peace of mind now...but I guess she knew that. That's why she said it. Isn't it?
I smiled at the brightest star, a sad warmness filling my heart.
"There's no point worrying about what's to come..."
I closed my eyes and let out a breath.
"What will happen, will happen."
I nodded to myself and glanced to the star once more.
"All I can do is try my best."
