It had been a day or two since I had got back from the trip to the campsite, my ankle was better, but not fully healed. I wasn't allowed to leave the house or help out around the farm until I had fully healed. Simply doing nothing was driving me insane. Sofia and Carol visited me a few times, but that was far from enough to keep me from boredom.
I decided to sneak out the house whilst no one was watching, which wasn't too hard. Everyone was still arguing and stressing about the boy they were holding captive, Randall, I think his name was. The hardest to avoid was Maggie though, but luckily Beth had called her for something.
After I had snuck out the house I had an idea. From what I heard from Carol and Maggie, they were keeping Randall in a barn not too far from the house. I decided to go and see what all the fuss was about myself. The only problem would be getting there unseen.
It took longer than I thought, I had to hide every now and then. I had to rest a couple times too, because of my ankle, but I eventually got to the barn. I have to admit, the fields of long grass helped me out a lot.
My next obstacle was, Daryl. He was standing in front of the barn with bloody hands. He was guarding the barn. I had been lucky up till now. I wasn't entirely sure how I'd get rid of him.
I thought for a moment, then got an idea. It was dumb. Stupid, actually. But it was so stupid it might just work.
I grabbed a nearby stone and threw it at the barn, catching his attention. I threw another, only just missing him this time. I saw him raise his crossbow, and slowly walk towards the field. Now I had his full attention. I purposely swayed the grass I was in, running about to make it move. When I heard him run closer, I ducked down and moved slow.
I managed to evade him and lost him in the grass. I then quietly snuck to the barn, but it was locked with a padlock and chain.
"Oh, for fucks sake." I muttered, flicking the padlock gently. I peeked through the door and tried looking for a way in.I saw Randall on his knees, tied up and bloody. He saw me and was about to talk but I held my finger up to my lips and shushed him. He nodded quickly like his life depened on it. I noticed a window above him, looked like there was a ladder out back leading to the barns loft.
"Bingo" I whispered.I was about to turn and leave when I felt a heavy grip on my shoulder.
"The hell you think you're doin'?"
I immediately recognised the voice to be Daryl's, and slowly turned around.
"I was curious." I confessed, surrendering. He scowled and grunted.
"Boy's dangerous. Go play somewhere else."
"So you all keep saying. But he doesn't look like much of a threat to me."
Daryl slung his crossbow on his back and crossed his arms.
"Just stay out of it. Or you part of his group?" He accused. I crossed my arms then pointed to the door, backing away.
"Why don't you find out?"He eyed me for a while, trying to see if I was scheming something, till he finally decided to unlock the padlock and threw off the chain. He opened the doors then turned to me.
"You wanted to see? Come'on then."I walked inside, noticing Randall was tied to the ground, his hands behind his back. There was no chance of him escaping. Randall looked up panicked, and started to plead.
"Awh man, I...I, already told you everything! I don't know anything else really!"
I walked closer to Randall and bent down in front of him.
"Wouldn't get too close if I ere' you." Daryl commented, closing the doors and leaning against them. I clicked my tongue.I scanned his face. It was bruised and bloodied. They way he acted alone told me that Daryl had tortured him. But there was something in his eyes... something I couldn't quite place...
I closed my eyes and ran my fingers through my hair. I didn't want to get involved, not with this, not with people, not with torture, but...Thinking of Sofia, Carol, Maggie...hell, even Carl...I didn't want them to be in danger.
"Name?" I asked, looking up to Randall.
"I already told them!"
"His names, Randall." Daryl called.
I shook my head.
"I know that. I want your full name."
"Hell you need that for? Don't make no difference. Names a name" Daryl yelled.I looked Randall in his eyes. He tried looking away but I grabbed his chin and made him face me again. I stared until he answered.
"Randall. Randall Belle." He answered shakily. I let go of his chin, he quickly looked away.
"Thought you were." I muttered, making sure he'd heard me, and stood up.Randall looked up to me confused. He began to panic. His breaths became rapid and shallow.
"I..I.. don't get it. I..I.. don't know you. I swear I don't!"
I heard Daryl walk towards me and grabbed my arm harshly.
"You kno' him? And you didn't say anything!?" His voice began to raise. I shoved him off my arm then bent back down to Randall's level and leaned into his ear and whispered."I know what you've done to those people."
His eyes widened and he jumped back, trying to get away from me.
"No. No...I didn't..." He began to cry. I stared him down and watched his expressions twist and turn. He began to breakdown.Daryl tried to drag me away but I shook him off again, never taking my eyes off Randall.
"I know what you did to her, Randall. You enjoyed it, didn't you?" I questioned.
He began to cry and break down.
"You act like you didn't, but you did." I prodded.Suddenly, his head snapped up to face me. He seemed angry. Seemed I had cracked him.
"You know what!?" He yelled, trying to wiggle out of his bindings.
"Yeah, I did! I enjoyed it when she cried and begged me to stop! I enjoyed it, when i watched her bleed out! I enjoyed it, when she begged for her life." He spat.He tried reaching for me, leaning up on his knees, getting in my face.
"When I get out of here, you'll be the first I kill. The first to beg."
I stood, never breaking eye contact.
"I won't stop, even if you beg and cry."I turned to face Daryl.
"Your answer." I stated, pointing to Randall.
"He's dangerous."
I walked past Daryl and left the barn, leaving Randall yelling and screaming behind me.Daryl locked the doors to the barn back up then stopped me, grabbing my arm.
"How the hell did you know im'?" He demanded. I shook him off.
"I bluffed." I replied hand on my hip.
"You what?"
"You could torture him all day, Daryl. He wouldn't have said anything." I began hobbling off and Daryl walked besides me.
"Bullshit. He told us-"
"He told you shit." I snapped.
"You were all arguing for days, DAYS. About if he was dangerous or not. The only thing you knew was his name and that he was part of a group. You knew what his group had done, but not what he had. Or if he had done anything at all"Daryl stepped in front of me, stopping me in my tracks.
"And if you're so smart, how'd you know then, huh? Been lyin' to us?" He yelled, pushing me slightly.
"I bluffed. You don't beat people to get information. You break them."After that, I said no more, I hobbled past Daryl and went back to the house. I just hoped Daryl wasn't going to hold a grudge. I don't think I'd win in a fight against him afterall...
