I ran back to the prison, killing any walkers I passed on the way, just in case the alarms were luring them to the prison. By the time I got back to the fence, I was out of breath and the prison was in chaos.
A few walkers were rattling on the fence outside, trying to get in to get at the noise. The animals were squealing in panic. But when I squinted my eyes, looking into the inner courtyard, I saw a worse sight. A swarm of walkers. I felt adrenaline rush through my veins and quickly took action.
I took out the walkers on the fence quickly, before they got the chance to turn around and notice me. Then I untied the wire on the fence. My fingers were shaking so much and going so fast, that I fumbled with it a few times, but managed to get it undone. Once I was inside, I quickly tied it back up and sprinted towards the inner courtyard.
I slowed down as I got to the gate, took a breath, and examined my surroundings. There was about five walkers wandering in the courtyard. I wasn't strong enough to take them all on at once, but I wasn't about to let them stop me. I survived Atlanta, I could survive this.
I whistled, drawing the closest ones attention and it came stumbling towards me, arms reached. I kicked my leg out, tripping it up, then plunged my knife into it's head, blowing a stray hair out of my face. I repeated that method until the coast was clear.
I walked over to the blocks entrance and noticed it was slightly ajar. The alarm was still blaring, causing me not to hear any walkers. I readied my knife and peeked inside, seeing a mini swarm of walkers. I backed away.
"Fuck. What the hell happened?" I muttered.
I scanned the courtyard and got an idea. I pulled my hair into a bun and zipped up my jacket. I walked over to a dead walker and plunged my knife inside it's stomach, tearing it in half. I closed my eyes and gagged at the smell, but it was my best option. I then covered myself in it's guts and blood, till I was sure I smelt like them.
I carefully opened the door and slowly walked in. The walkers sniffed the air, but couldn't tell that I was living and ignored me. I took advantage of that fact and killed any walkers I came across easily, slowly clearing the hallways.
I peeked inside our cell block, but no-one was inside. I paused and thought for a moment.
"If I was sat here...and an alarm suddenly went off...and walkers came in...where would I go?" I asked myself.
I slowly backed out of the cell block and turned to face the exit.
"I'd leave...but they weren't outside...so they went..."
I turned on my heel, facing another hallway.
"This way.." I muttered and walked down the hall.
I kept turning corners, checking rooms and killing walkers, but, I couldn't find anyone. I didn't know where anyone had run off to, but, I did know one thing. There was a lot of walkers and they weren't just prison walkers but civilians too. That meant one thing, a breach.
I continued to roam the halls till I came across an upsetting sight. T-Dog's corpse. It lay in a deserted hallway, bitten and chewed to oblivion, his gun on the floor beside him. I crouched down beside him, picked up his gun and closed his eyes with two fingers.
"I'm sorry, T." I whispered.
I went to stand but noticed a scarf clutched in his hand, as well as a knife. A purple scarf. It was Carol's. As was the knife. They were together.
I stood and scanned the halls. I noticed the alarms had finally stopped. The only sound that remained was a few, quiet, distant moans.
I closed my eyes and took a breath, deep in thought. Carol and T-Dog were together. There were dead walkers on the ground near T-Dog, but, no Carol. I sighed and looked down at his body.
"You fought them off for her, didn't you?"
I choked out a laugh, my throat going dry.
"Idiot. I'll find Carol. I'm sure she's safe, thanks to you" I whispered.
