All of us got up early to clear the first block of the prison. Of course, not all of us were going, but everyone woke up together just the same. Only Rick, Daryl, T-Dog, Glenn, Maggie and I were going inside today, the rest would wait until we gave the all clear.
We went to the fence that Rick had locked shut yesterday, it lead to the inner courtyard and the first cell block. There were a few walkers roaming inside the inner courtyard, who immediately came crashing onto the gate when they heard us.
Rick was going over our plan and the rules one last time, he wanted to make sure we didn't lose anyone else after the farm.
"Remember; stay in formation, don't use your guns, we don't need them swarming us from all over the prison, stick together, don't leave anyone behind and most of all, stay focused in there." Rick commanded as Carl got ready to open the gates.
"Aim for the head people." Daryl said.
I rolled my eyes and nudged his arm.
"We know that, Dixion."
"Just makin' sure."
"Guys, get ready!" Glenn scolded.
"Stay close" Maggie muttered.
When Carl opened the gate we got into formation. We formed a circle, so we had no blind spots, no matter where we turned, someone had our backs. I was between Daryl and Maggie.
We barged our way inside, Rick and T-Dog killing the first two walkers. I saw Carl quickly shut the gate behind us, we gave a nod to each other.
"Be back soon, Carl. I've got your dad's back, don't worry" I told him.
"Stay safe, y/n"
We walked back to back through the inner courtyard, there were more walkers than I thought, but we handled them just fine. We called out to each other if we saw walkers approaching and took them down when they came too close, all in all, our system worked pretty well.
We got to the courtyards door, it was left slightly open. Daryl tried peeking inside but all he could see was darkness, the prison didn't have working lights afterall. He and Rick were about to head in, after the inner courtyard was cleared, but I stopped them.
"I've got a better idea" I told them.
I went to leave the formation.
"What are ya' doin'?" Daryl asked.
I picked up a few rocks from the ground.
"Watch and learn."
I went over to the door and put my ear and hands against it, hearing nothing. I then threw a few rocks inside. They bounced off the floor and echoed throughout the hall. After the rocks had made some noise, I heard a few shuffles and groans, it sounded like at least a handful of walkers.
I got back into my position and pointed through the door.
"There's a few inside, about five I reckon."
"How are you sure?" Rick asked.
"Old trick. They're attracted to sound. I used to lure them out of places with sound when I was alone, after some time, I knew how many walkers were inside just by the sounds of their feet." I explained, readying my knife.
Rick and Daryl gave me an impressed nod.
"This always works?" Asked Rick.
I nodded.
"Sound first, smell second. Forget them seeing you in the dark, they're basically blind, even in daylight, they are dead afterall."
"How'd you know all this?" Asked Glenn.
"Gotta survive somehow."
"Impressive, for a city girl" Maggie praised, but whispered the last part so only I could hear.
We went inside and easily dispatched the walkers I had lured, since we kept quiet and their backs were to us. Luckily, they were the only walkers in the current hallway, so now, the courtyards and entrance were clear.
T-Dog pointed ahead.
"Cell block A. We clearing that first?" He whispered.
Rick nodded.
"Clear the cell block, get a place to rest. We can clear the connecting hallways after. Then try find other areas, like cafeteria and infirmary." He instructed.
We all nodded in agreement and went on.
