I jumped at the sudden touch, hearing a chuckle from behind me. I'd heard that chuckle a few times now, I had a good idea who was behind me.
I leaned against the porchs fence, dangling my arms over the railings.
"Cowgirl?" I asked, hanging my head to the side. I heard a scoff.
"City girl. Thought I said we'd get you patched up?" Maggie replied, leaning next to me, her back facing the fields and face facing me.
"It's just a scratch" I shrugged, lifting my hand up to touch the wound on my head. When I touched it I accidentally flinched, it was swollen and more sore than I had imagined, but the blood had scabbed over and dried up. I didn't know how big the cut on my head was, but considering a stranger was nagging me about it, I suppose it was at least somewhat serious.
Maggie smirked, then stood straight.
"See. Hurts don't it? Not just a scratch."
I let out an annoyed sigh and turned to face her.
"I can take care of it." I waved her off.
"With what? A map and pen?" She joked. I let out a small laugh and shook my head. I pointed to my backpack.
"Got a medkit in there."Maggie took that as permission to look inside and unzipped the bag on my back. She started rummaging through my things, till I tried turning around.
"Woah, woah! Who said you could do that?" I raised my voice slightly, trying to shake her off but she wouldn't let go.
"Well, if you won't let me help, I'll just have to make you let me" She laughed. I tried swatting her off, but she didn't budge. She accidentally hit may back too hard, the same place Daryl had earlier, trying to find the medkit.
"OW, damn, careful." I yelped. My yell shocked her enough to make her let go. I heard her mutter an apology.I threw my backpack to the floor and bent down to look through its contents myself. Maggie watched me closely. When I found the medkit, I got up and held it out to her.
"I'm guessing you were looking for this? Or were you just being nosey?" I joked, giving her a slight grin. She took the small kit and opened it up. Then looked to me, nodding.
"Plenty to patch you up. We can keep the rest. Been running low on medical supplies as of late."She closed the the kit and strolled to the door, pausing in the doorway. She turned to look at me.
"Come on then, city girl. Let's patch you up." She nodded her head to the side, telling me to follow.
"I am so sick of that name.." I muttered, trudging after her, hearing another chuckle on the way.She took me into the kitchen and set the medkit out on the counter. I took a seat on a nearby stool, watching her sort out the supplies. She then stood in front of me and lifted my chin up gently. She seemed to be examining my wound, but it made me very nervous. I swear my heart was about to burst out of my chest.
"You'll need a few stitches, Daryl hit you pretty good." She said, letting go of my chin, then gathering a needle and thread, as well as some alcohol wipes.
"I don't suppose you can numb it, can you?" I asked, crossing my fingers. She approached me and dabbed my wound gently with the wipes. I hissed.
"No, sorry"
"Great. Just...do it quick" I mumbled, fidgeting with my fingers. She nodded.
"I'll try."Once Maggie had cleaned my wound, and the dried blood on my face, she grabbed the needle and thread, ready to stitch. She looked me in the eye, making sure I was ready and I gave her a nod.
She began to stitch. I clenched my fists as the needle pierced my skin. She tried to be gentle and get it over with as fast as she could, but it seemed like forever to me. My head began to ache after a while too.
After a few more stitches Maggie was done. I raised my hand to touch the stitch but she grabbed it.
"Wouldn't do that" She said shaking her head, then letting go to tidy up. I hung my head up, as if it would get rid of the pain.
"Thanks. For stitching me up, I mean" I breathed out. My words were a bit quiet, but I know she heard me.
"No problem. Need you in one piece after all." She smiled. I huffed.
"Charming."I watched as she finished clearing away the medical supplies, sorting the spares into different cabinets. She then came back over to me and leaned on the counter.
"Sorry we don't have anything for the pain. We've gone through supplies like a buncha' starving pigs" She joked and I shook my head.
"It's fine...really" I said whilst wincing.
"First time?" She asked, raising an eyebrow. I looked up confused, then she pointed to her head.
"Oh. Getting stitches? Yeah. I'm not really an...adventurous type? Didn't go out much so, I didn't get injured often." I clarified, trying not to let the pain get to me. Maggie laughed.
"Don't suprise me. You don't exactly look like an adventurous type."
"That an insult?" I joked, leaning closer to her.
"Maybe" She shrugged.
"Maybe not. We'll see"Maggie then stood from the counter and smiled, offering me a hand up. I raised a brow.
"I'm injured not disabled" I joked, getting up by myself.
"Yes, ma'am" She said, raising her hands, then walking to the hallway.
"Come on, you can stay in the spare room upstairs tonight." She instructed, leading the way, as I followed.
"Yes ma'am" I copied, rolling my eyes. She showed me to my spare room upstairs, it was like heaven. A bed with a mattress, a soft carpet and soft fluffy pillows and sheets. After staying in the woods so long, I forgot such comfort existed. I excitedly jumped onto the bed, embracing the pillows, but immediately regretted my actions.
"Agh, fuck. Forgot about that" I muttered, holding my head gently. After a few moments of laying on the sheets, cursing myself, I decided to go to sleep. I was on a bed, in a house, surrounded by people. If I wasn't going to take advantage of that to get a good night's sleep, well, I'd just be an idiot. Plus, I'd definitely need some rest if I was heading back out tomorrow.
