I was awake before everyone else. I had hardly got any sleep, even with Maggie by my side all night. I guess the ghosts of the past just haunted me a little too much.
Since I couldn't go back to sleep and I didn't want to wake the others, I decided to explore a little. I vented out my grief by clearing out the floor Zoe's apartment was on. I searched most of the apartments, trying to find anything useful, but it was clear that people had packed their things and left for refugee camps way back, leaving nothing behind.
By the time I was done, it was sunrise, so I decided to head back to the apartment. I entered quietly, making sure to not wake anyone. I crept my way back into the bedroom, but Maggie was already up.
She got up from the bed and came over to hug me. She kissed my forehead then held my cheeks.
"Where'd you go? I woke up and you were gone." She said softly.
I kissed her nose then leaned my forehead on hers.
"Couldn't sleep. I decided to clear the floor instead."
She snapped back in an instant.
"Alone!? Y/n-"
"I know. But I'm here, I'm safe."
She shook her head and sighed.
"You could've woke me, I would've gone with you."
I tucked her hair behind her ear and kissed her cheek.
"I wanted you to rest."
She sighed and flicked my forehead.
"You're such an idiot."
I pouted and rubbed my forehead.I took her hand and lead her back to the bed. I sat down and pulled her into my lap, wrapping the sheets around us so we were warm. She wrapped her legs around my waist and her arms around my neck.
"Why are you up so early?" I asked.
She rested her chin on my shoulder and sighed.
"I don't know..I just..I knew..somehow, I just knew you were gone."
I couldn't help but smile and kissed her cheek.
"You've got spider-senses." I joked.
"What?"
"Oh my god, have you never seen spiderman?"
"What's that?"
I pulled back slightly, looking at her in shock.
"Only one of the most famous superhero movies in the world."
She raised a brow.
"Oh my god, you really are a country bumpkin."
She rolled her eyes and poked my stomach.
"Well maybe you should've gone out more."
I shook my head dramatically.
"I guess that settles it.."
She chuckled softly.
"Settles what?"
"I'm gonna have to find an old DVD player and the spiderman flims."
"And where are you gonna find those?"
I wriggled my eyebrows.
"We're going to a mall."
"And?"
"Steal some." I grinned.
She slapped my stomach softly.
"So childish."
"Come on, it's the end of the world. We need to gave some fun!"We cuddled for a while, talking about things we liked, things we used to do, my experiences living in a city...
Then I got an idea. Maggie had lived on the farm her whole life, well, not her whole life, but she'd never been to a city before, she had never been to a mall before.."I have an idea!" I perked up.
"Oh god, what now?"
I slapped her arm.
"You'll like it."
She pulled away a little, swinging my hands.
"Go on then, I'm listening."
"Well, since we're going to spend a while here anyway..."
"Yes..?"
I fiddled with her fingers, intertwining them.
"Well...we could, you know...go on a date.."
Maggie went silent. I tried to read her expression but I couldn't tell what she was thinking.
I began to start rambling."Well, we don't have to! Obviously! I mean, I know nowhere is really perfect for such a thing now..and..everything's a little run down..I just thought we could look in the stores..kinda like a shopping date! But not a shopping date...a stealing date? Looting? I..uh..it sounded better in my head..Of course we're here to find supplies first, I just thought-"
Maggie cut me off by crashing her lips on mine. She pulled my head forward roughly and and played with my hair.
"You're cute when you're nervous."
I opened and closed my mouth like a fish. It seemed like my brain was malfunctioning.
"I..you..me..uh..Is that a-"
She grabbed my cheeks and kissed my nose.
"Yes. It's a yes. I think it's sweet."
I felt a huge grin spread across my face and I engulfed her in a tight hug.
"We have have something to look forward to then!"
