It took a few days to leave the city. I had to move slower than usual, since I had a kid with me now. On top of that, she couldn't walk, I had to carry her. Her body was so weak that her legs couldn't support her...
So until I had nursed her back to a healthy weight...I had to carry her.
Before I left the city, I did go back to Zoe's, just to make sure that no-one was there. But, I didn't even need to enter the building to find my answer...
The trucks were gone. They had left.
Since I had few supplies, no transport and a child, I stayed for a couple days to find supplies for the road, as well as a vehicle. The latter of which was easier to find since, well, this was a city, cars were everywhere.
I managed to find a suitable car near a gas station, on the very edge of town. I managed to fix it up and fuel it with the remaining gas in the pumps, as well as a few jerry cans...just in case.
By the time we had finally managed to leave the city, I had spent three days there.
Winter hadn't uttered a word the whole time. I thought she was scared of me, but she wasn't. In fact, she never wanted to leave my side, and every time I placed her down, she made sure she was attached to me in some way.
Though she never spoke, she still communicated. If she wanted something, she'd point, or mimic it. She even signaled to me when walkers were about. She was a very smart girl for her age...especially considering the circumstances...
I drove the car down the highway carefully, making sure to weave through the broken cars without breaking mine. As I was watching the road, I noticed signs for the prison begging to appear. We were finally halfway home. Just a little ways left.
As I drove, I noticed the sun was getting closer to setting, but we should be able to make it back before dark. I'd finally be able to see Maggie again...
Just as the thought crossed my mind, some lunatic ran straight in front of the car, making me swerve and crash into the barriers. I quickly pulled Winter into my chest and shielded her just as the car made impact, throwing me back into the dashboard, the back of my head smashing into it.
I ignored the pain in my head and checked Winter over. Luckily, she seemed unharmed, just a little shocked. I hugged her tightly, thanking whatever God was out there, that I managed to shield her in time.
Before I could even process another thought, I smelt smoke emitting from the engine. It was completely fucked.
I had to get us out before it decided to set ablaze, or worse, blow up. But, I found it difficult to move. My head felt heavy and I felt blood trickling down my neck. It hurt to think, let alone lift a finger.
I was about to get out of the car, but I heard footsteps approaching. Then, I remembered how I had crashed...
Knowing I wouldn't be able to get both of us out before whoever was approaching got to us, I nodded to the open window and begun to instruct Winter.
"Winter, climb out the window and hide nearby."
She clutched my chest tighter, so I kissed her head and stroked her hair, trying to soothe her.
"You need to...what's the first rule?"
She slumped in my chest, then slowly mimicked hiding.
"Good girl. Go. Don't go too far."
She reluctantly pulled away and crawled out the window mere seconds before whoever approached got to me.
They yanked me out the car, along with my bag. They roughly dragged me by my shoulder, then yelled.
"It's a girl that crashed!" It was a man's voice.
"Claimed!" Yelled a man.
He began to drag me, presumably over to his friends.
"Bull! I found 'er!"
"Ye didn't claim 'er though."
"But I found 'er!"
