The winter months went by slowly, but they were also the most peaceful months we've had so far. The snow prevented walkers from getting too close to the fences, and we hadn't heard anything from Woodbury either.
I spent most of my time with Winter and Maggie, as well as the two pups. Daryl also joined us pretty often, since he grew an attachment to Winter pretty quickly, as well as my two pups.
We spent most of our time teaching Winter basic things, like how to read and write, as well as a few survival skills. Perhaps that stuff wasn't important anymore, but at least it gave her something to do. It would also give her a way to communicate with us since she still didn't talk.
Once Winter learned how to write, she always carried around a notepad and pencil, so she could talk to us. Contrary to what I thought her first words would be, the first thing she wrote down was 'mommy' with a heart beneath it, then she showed it to Maggie and I. Maggie practically teared up when Winter had called her mom for the first time, it was all she spoke about all day. She carried Winter and the note around, making sure to show everyone. She was a very proud mom, it was really cute.
Daryl was pretty grumpy when Maggie had shown him the note, and he spent the rest of the day trying to get Winter to call him uncle. Which she did, eventually, but she went to Hershel and wrote him a little granpa note first. The fact that Daryl was last on her list, actually made Daryl pout for the rest of the day. So Winter spent the rest of the day looking after him and cheering him up, which included her writing a note saying he was 'the best uncle ever'. So, naturally, when he got it, he bragged about it. In fact, I'm pretty sure he's kept that note on him ever since...
Winter also became a lot more lively since she could write. Despite her never speaking, that didn't mean she had nothing to say.
Whenever she wrote us a note, it was always full of character. And it was always wrote either one of two ways. She was either very sweet, or extraordinarily sassy. I'm not sure where she got the sass from....
Though Maggie is fairly adamant that she got it from me and Daryl. Especially since she tended to copy me word for word sometimes...
Oops.
Hershel spent his time knitting Winter her toy, and the jumpers he said he'd make for the pups. Surprisingly, the pups loved the jumpers...though, it was mainly because Hershel bribed them with some jerky. But still, once they were on, they didn't want to take them off.
As for Winter's toy, he had made her a wolf plushie, and after it was complete, she never went anywhere without it. She even named it after Coco, calling it mini Coco. She slept with it, played with it, learned with it, washed with it...she took it everywhere with her. But because she took it everywhere with her, it needed washing often, and oh my, was the first time it got washed a time to remember...
Maggie tried to take it from her, saying mini Coco needed a wash. Winter refused, not wanting to let her go, so Maggie tried persuading her, but Winter was very persistent. Eventually, Maggie had to take her plush whilst she wasn't looking. And the moment Winter found mini Coco hanging up to dry, she was upset. She wouldn't speak to Maggie for the rest of the day, and instead refused to leave my arms.
Naturally, I took pictures to remember this moment. I got pictures of Maggie pouting, Winter sticking her tongue out at her, and us cuddled up together. Maggie wasn't too happy that I found the situation amusing instead of helping her, but I eventually did. After laughing first that is.
Eventually, I convinced Winter that Maggie just didn't want her to get sick from mini Coco being too dirty. I told her that it was just the same as when we cleaned and brushed Coco and Cream. When I had said that, she immediately apologised to Maggie and drew her the cutest little apology picture.
