IN LIBRARY
Mythili was sincerely trying to concentrate on her assignment, but it felt like a losing battle. She was fighting with the textbooks, frantically gathering information for her topic, and turning pages again and again until the paper felt thin under her fingertips.
But she was failing miserably. Her mind was a stubborn traitor, stuck in a loop of the morning's events.
'Why am I thinking about him? Why does he appear everywhere I go—even in my own head?' she wondered, her grip on her pen tightening until her knuckles turned white. Falling for someone—especially a man who carried the weight of the city on his shoulders—was not on her agenda. 'But falling for someone isn't a choice, is it?'
She closed her eyes for a second, feeling the lack of control like a physical weight. "Stop it, Mythili. You are wasting time." she muttered softly, forcing her eyes back to the text. It was the first time in her life she was losing the war against her own concentration, and she hated it.
After a long, exhausting struggle, she managed to finish half of the assignment. She glanced at her watch: 7:30 PM.
"Oh no, it's already this late?"
She quickly packed her books, the library's silence now feeling heavy. The campus was almost empty, the shadows of the trees stretching like long fingers across the pavement. Only a few security guards were stationed at the gates, their torches flickering in the distance.
She walked to the parking lot, started her scooty, and headed toward home. On the way, the bright neon sign of an ice-cream parlor caught her eye. She slowed down, the humid air making the thought of something cold irresistible.
"It's almost monsoon... but still, ice cream?" she smiled to herself. "Why not?"
She sat quietly with a cup of butterscotch, enjoying the chill. After finishing, she thought of her friends. 'Let's take some for those monkeys too, otherwise they won't let me live in peace.'
She packed two more and walked back to her scooty. Suddenly—BAM!
Someone dashed into her with full force. The ice-cream packet flew from her hand, hit the asphalt, and burst. Mythili lost her balance, her scooty tilting over, pinning her leg briefly before they both hit the ground hard.
"Hey! Mister, can't you see?" Mythili shouted, her voice shaking with anger and shock.
But the man didn't stop. He didn't even look back. He kept running as if a ghost were at his heels.
"Idiot..." she muttered, wincing as she pushed the scooty off her. Her elbow was badly scratched, the skin raw and bleeding slightly. She dusted her dress, her heart sinking as she looked at the ice-cream packet. It was stepped on, ruined, and melting into the dirt.
"Perfect... just great." she sighed, her voice cracking.
She tried to start the scooty. Once. Twice. Thrice. The engine just coughed and died. With no other option, she started dragging the heavy bike.
Her leg was throbbing, her steps uneven. Normally, it was a thirty-minute ride home, but at this pace?
"The Metro is the only option... I'll park it there and go," she murmured, her eyes stinging with frustrated tears.
