The Silent Sacrifice & The Echo of a Vow

Ram sat on his swing chair, the rhythmic creak of the wood matching the frantic beat of his heart. Tomorrow. The engagement.
Is it true? Did she finally give up on me? He wondered if Sowmya was playing a prank, but deep down, he knew the truth. He had pushed Mythili so far away that he had practically handed her to another man.
Should i go there?
Then what about her father? How will he react if he see me?
His mind drifted back to the sterile, white walls of the hospital—the place where his world had shattered.
Flashback:________
Sravan practically skidded through the hospital hallways, his breath hitching as he reached the emergency ward. Both Ram and Mythili were inside, shielded by swinging doors and the frantic movements of surgeons.
Finally, the doctor treating Ram stepped out. He rushed him before the door could even close.
"Doctor! I'm Sravan, a fellow officer. How is DCP Ramachandra? Is he okay?"
The doctor exhaled, wiping sweat from his brow. "He's got a badly injured right leg—looks like he pushed it way past the limit. He's taken two bullets and lost a lot of blood, but we can manage the situat—"
He was cut short. Another doctor emerged from the adjacent room, his face like stone, radiating a gravity that made Sravan's stomach drop.
"Who is the guardian for the female patient?" the second doctor asked, his voice low and urgent.
Sravan stepped forward, his voice trembling. "It's me, doctor... I'm her brother...How is she? Tell me she's okay."
The doctor didn't sugarcoat it. "Her condition is critical. Heavy blood loss, a severe head injury from a blunt impact, and a fractured arm. But more than that... thana heartbeat padipothundi... (her heartbeat is dropping...) She's in deep shock. We need to move, now."
Sravan felt a cold pit in his stomach. He had feared this from the moment the team reported how they found them. He knew Ram was a fighter—a trained officer who had survived worse—but Mythili was different. She was fragile, a 'delicate doll' caught in a storm.
"Doctor... please. Emaina cheyyandi, kani thanani brathikinchandi... (Do anything, but please save her)." Sravan pleaded, his voice breaking.
He knew the truth: if Mythili didn't make it, Ram would never be the same. He would lose his soul along with her.
"We will try our level best," the doctor replied grimly. "Since this is an attempted murder case, please finish the formalities immediately. We're starting the surgery now."
Sravan nodded numbly as the doctors vanished back into the O.T., leaving him alone with the crushing silence of the hallway.
He sank into a plastic chair, burying his face in his hands. As the morning sun began to peek through the hospital windows, he made the calls he dreaded. He reached out to Ram's parents first, then to Sandhya and Sowmya, asking them to break the news to Mythili's family.
Soon, the quiet hallway was filled with the sound of muffled sobs. Ram's mother, Radhika, was inconsolable, leaning heavily on her husband.
Nearby, Sowmya was a crying mess, while Sandhya stood frozen in shock, trying to be the strong one but failing to hide her trembling hands.
