The stepsister
I didn't look at the caller ID and answered it by putting a shirt into the suitcase.
"Hello-"
"Minji. Prepare dinner and clean the bathroom. I left money on the counter, and buy chicken and some vegetables. Dinner has to be done at 6 pm."
Then she hangs up.
I go to the kitchen to find the money on the counter.
I already bought the things I need for Korea but I forgot a few things.
"Where is it?"
Whispering to myself I tried to find the things I came for.
The thought of leaving without giving something to Jaeseong ate me up.
Jae likes pistachio and peanuts.
I also decided to give him a bracelet, I hope he'll wear it.
Just when I found the pistachio a girl who was slightly shorter than me bumped into me.
"Oh, I'm sorry!"
She had blonde hair with sharp facial lines and looked like a child but clearly was not.
Also, her cheeks looked squishy.
Not wanting to be rude I nod with a slight smile.
Choosing a few bags of pistachio and peanuts I felt a tap on my shoulder.
I turn only to find the same girl who bumped me standing behind me.
"Excuse me, are you Kang Minji?"
It was weird, how did she know me?
"Yes?"
"I'm Jisung's stepsister, Han Soojin."
Immediately she shook my hand and put on a bright smile.
"Really? Han talked about you, I'm glad I met you."
"You doing grocery shopping? Let me help. Can I?"
She grabbed the list out of my hand.
A giggle escaped my mouth, she's so much like Jisung.
"Thanks, there's not much left. Just the chicken."
She nods gesturing me to follow her.
"It's over here."
"You going to walk?"
Her small curious face was so cute.
"Yeah. My house is three blocks away. Wanna go with me?"
"Sure. Are you free after this?"
We started walking and I couldn't fight the shock on my face.
"Ummm yes and no. I have to make dinner and then go to Han's. Only if you wanna stay with me until then."
As she was nodding her hair bounced up and down.
"Great plan! Anyways, Han told me you'll be going to our university."
"Yep. I can't describe how nervous I am."
"Don't worry. I'll help you with everything around there. Your number 1 assistant!"
She held her hand up saluting me with a smile that showed off her perfect teeth.
Dinner was ready, everything was prepared for my dear family.
The only thing left was some final pieces to put into the suitcase and make "the gift" for my brother.
Soojin was by my side the whole time helping me out, making funny jokes, and being a good friend which is surprising.
"Where are your mom and dad?"
"They went to my grandpa. They won't come anytime soon."
"What's the point of making dinner then?"
"I don't know. I just have to. Now let's pack some things that I left out."
She looked around my room looking at the posters, figurines, and other decorations while I packed a few more stuff.
I found a few notebooks in my closet.
They were my diaries. Maybe I should bring them. My past wasn't so happy nor clear but I wanna keep it as a book to read.
I always kept them hidden behind the closet so my mom won't find them.
A lot of stuff is written there. All of the happenings and things that went through my mind.
I put them on the bottom of the suitcase, then as the last thing, my favorite white zip-up hoodie.
When I closed it I pull it up and head out.
Soojin followed me around while I did some last chores before we finally went to Han's.
Soojin rang the bell, I was watching the evening scenery of our street.
"I wasn't here for a year. I can say that things haven't changed not even a bit."
"I like this place so much, but at the same time I'm glad I'm not going to live here anymore."
The door opened revealing Han that had a normal smile before he saw his stepsister.
"Soojin! Omg!"
He jumped towards her and hug her so tightly I could feel it.
"Jisung!"
How much I wish I had a good relationship with my brother like this.
When he pulled away he came and gave me a soft hug too.
"Hey."
"Hey back."
"Come on, get in. I'll bring the suitcase."
I nod as a thank you while I get in with Soojin.
Once we got our shoes off a familiar voice sounded off through the house.
"Minji! I baked some cookies, come here!"
"Guess who came with me."
We went into the kitchen with Soojin hiding behind me.
I smiled brightly when I came in front of their mother.
"Let me see, who's hiding here?"
I move away and Soojin spreads her hands with happiness written on her face.
"My little girl!"
What cost my mother to be like this?
After all of the hugging, jokes, and happiness we were gathered in Jisung's room chatting.
"I wanna say, Minji, there are a lot of hot guys there so be careful with your heart."
Soojin teased me while I slap her arm a little.
"Hey! I'm not going there to find a boyfriend."
"You could."
In the corner of my eye, I saw Han shifting uncomfortably.
"Enough of that. Are you going with us tomorrow or you'll come to Busan next week?"
"I'm going next week. I have to spend some time here and meet my old friends."
It was already 10 pm when I left.
At home, my family came back but they slept already except for Jae.
I'll make the gift now.
