Several minutes later, the clock was ticking as we stood in front of our beloved orphanage's owner. I was relieved that Elysia would be kind enough to let Natasha know our next playdate. It's rare for her to want to listen to my request. Usually, she asks me for something to reward her.
Just to be sure, I will buy something from the shopping district for the three of them.
Something made me wide awake as Matron was still looking at the legal documents through her glasses. I rubbed the back of my head and stared at the girl beside me. Trix ignored my stares and acted innocently while gazing at Matron. Defeated, I can only do the same as her.
We were like this until Matron put her documents and glasses on her work desk. Her grey eyes seemed tired, yet her gaze was looking at us warmly.
"I apologize for making you two waiting," the grey-haired lady said as she stood up and let us take a seat, "ah. Do you want some cookies and tea?"
My mouth almost drooled while both of us sitting on the chairs, then I raised my hand and said, "Ye-."
"It's all right. Thank you for your offering, Madame."
I slammed my head on the desk.
Both of them looked at me with surprised as Matron asked me worryingly.
"Is anything okay, my dear?"
"No-Nothing," I mumbled through the desk's surfaces.
Matron chuckled and placed something next to my cheek. It smells sweet and warm, like nostalgic feelings of mine. My eyelids slowly opened.
A bundle of warm cookies on a white plate and a white cup filled with tea on the side—just more or less the same as my dreams.
Happily, I grabbed one of the cookies and tasted it. After finishing the cookie, I drank the tea before it got cold. Seeing me enjoy my snacks, Trix sighed.
"Matron... Stop spoiling her, will you?"
Our parental figure raised one of her eyebrows and asked, "Do you want some too?"
"No. You know what I mean," she groaned while taking one from the plate, "she's almost eighteen years old for god's sake."
When my age was mentioned, I stopped eating and looked down at the floor.
She's right. I didn't have time to be childish anymore. But-
"What's wrong with liking cookies? No one is old enough to eat snacks."
Hearing that, my eyes looked up at her smiling face.
"Including both of you," she continued while drinking her tea, "and me."
Her talking about cookies made us speechless. Even if I agreed with her, it still surprised me.
Does that mean she loves cookies too?
I glanced to my best friend whom crossing her arms beside me. She seemed enjoyed the cookie, despite her denying it before.
"See? There's nothing wrong about liking cookies," I softly nudged her side while smiling.
Trix finished the cookie on her hand as she grunted, "Whatever."
Seeing us getting along, Matron chuckled again. "I think we should stop talking about snacks," Matron smiled and asked, "How about... Another topic? Is there anything I can do for you two?"
My best friend pinched me on my waist under the table, it seemed like she wanted me to talk about our plan instead. Without further ado, I explained it to her.
"Uhm... Trix and I have a plan to go to the shopping district. We will be a little bit late for lunch. Is it alright with you?"
She raised one of her eyebrows and said, "Trix and you?"
"Y-yeah."
"May I know what the reason is?" She responded with worried eyes, "It's not a prank, is it?"
Seeing her like this made me quiet as I couldn't think how to answer her questions. After a minute of silence, Trix lost her patience.
"Matron, why don't you trust your children more? It's not like we're the only ones who need permission here."
The owner of grey eyes played with her fingers and answered, "Because... It's you and Viona."
My best friend grumbled, "Tell us why we can't go together."
"You two should know better than I do," she reproached.
"I don't know why, but every time you two went out together, I always got bad news after you two got home."I flinched, remembering our mischief in the past. We always got into some trouble, even when we didn't want to.
Of course, she's worried about us. We are more likely to get into trouble than our peers-Mostly, it was me, though.
Erasing my guilt, I ate two more cookies in peace. Then, Trix whispered as she pinched my hand. "It's your fault, so just beg her to let us go."
I raised one of my eyebrows, "You know that both of us are at fault, right?"
The pinches became harder, and I almost yelped in pain.
Trix glared at me and retorted, "For your information, you always the one who dragged me into troubles first, and I'm the one who took you out from that trouble. Be responsible at once, will you?"
Her silver eyes threatened me, forcing me to retreat.
"Matron," I pleaded while giving her my best puppy eyes, "I really wanted to go with Trix. It's my last wish. I promise I won't get into trouble."
A pair of the grey eyes almost surrendered, then Trix gave her the last attack.
"Just put trust on us, we will be fine." Her silver eyes gaze sweetly at Matron, "I swear on my name, I won't do anything that makes you unhappy for today."
As soon as she heard that, Matron relaxed her tense back on the chair. "All right," she finally agreed to our request, "you can go together."
Trix and I shook our hands secretly.
Seeing us in a victorious mood, Matron continued. "But, promise me that you will be here before dark. I don't want you two to never come back here ever again."
We glanced to each other, then both us smiled at her promisingly. "We promise."
"Good," Matron smiled reluctantly, "have fun there and don't forget our promises."
"We will," I smiled while standing as I held my best friend's hand, "thank you for letting us go."
"Yeah, thank you for trusting us. We will be back before six in afternoon," Trix stood up while leaving my hand alone.
"You're welcome."
Then, we left the Matron's office room. Suddenly, Matron called Trix back in as we already in front the door. My best-friend glanced at me to wait her outside. Because I didn't want to make this more complicated, I could only obey and waited for her as she told me to.
