We arrived at the orphanage, where a lady with grey hair and grey eyes was waiting for us at the entrance. She smiled and let us in.
"Welcome back, Trix and Viona."
"We're back, Matron."
Trix bowed politely as we released our grip on each other. Even if I had already missed her hand, I shouldn't have said anything about it in front of others.
"How was your picnic?" Matron gently invited us in.
"It was-"
"Waa! It's Trix and Viona! Welcome home!"
The younger orphans welcome us with happy faces. It made my cheeks warm up to see them. I hope that they are safe and have a future this time. As I was in a daze, they quickly surrounded me, separating Trix and me.
In the corner of my eye, Trix and Matron were talking to each other secretly. I couldn't hear them that well because of the children chattering around me.
Maybe Matron needs Trix to be in her office? But, for what exactly?
My best friend has never been in trouble before, at least in my memory.
So, it's unusual for her to be in Matron's office. I don't remember this happening before the fire. My thoughts become more focused on Trix and Matron.
What are they talking about? Is she going to tell me at dinner? Is this related to the fire? I hope Trix didn't mind if she shared it with me.
I gripped my own hand to calm myself down.
If she's not, should I ask her in somewhere private?
Thechildren keep asking me to play with them. Because there was no escape, Iagreed to play tag in the backyard. We played continuously until the chefwrapped up our dinner in the dining room. Even though the exhaustion made mehungry, my curiosity still did not calm down.
