Lori and Brett sprint through the rain. Their attacker is on their heels, their supernatural strength giving only the slightest advantage. Lori's foot slips in a puddle and she crashes to the asphalt with a grunt.
"Get up, Lori! Come on, run!" Brett yells, yanking his sister back to her feet. "Run- ah!" He cries out as an arrow lodges into his shoulder. "Go!" He hobbles after her. He rips the arrow out and jumps to the side, another arrow just barely missing him.
An assassin lunges for him and Brett tries to disarm his crossbow. But in his weakened state, it's a bit difficult. With a burst of strength, he throws the man to the side. He grunts as he lands on the ground. Brett takes his chance and sprints to catch up to Lori. He follows her onto Davendford Prep's lacrosse field.
"Wait! Lori, stop!" She stops in the center of the field and he reaches her. They watch as the lights suddenly turn on, illuminating the field. He shoves Lori behind him as multiple red lasers aim for him, their lights bright on his shirt.
"Brett, what's happening?" Lori cries as she grasps tightly onto her older brother's arm.
"Close your eyes," Brett tells her calmly. He knows there's no way out. He only wants to make sure it's quick and painless. He doesn't want Lori to see him die. Lori does and presses her face into his back.
As an arrow is released, aiming straight for his heart, Brett holds his breath. But the arrow never reaches him. Instead. It's sliced in the air and falters to the grass.
Brett gasps as the kitsune appears before him. "Run!"
He doesn't have to be told twice. He grabs Lori and they sprint off the field as Kira faces the hunters, katana in hand. She slices every oncoming arrow as they fire rapidly.
Hana POV:
Liam, Scott, and I are at the McCall house. Derek took Braeden back to the loft to get more ammo and weapons for the next time we're jumped.
Scott grabs his helmet form upstairs and I beckon Liam to follow us out. "Kira found Brett. They're fine but we've got to go," I tell them.
"More assassins?" Liam asks worriedly.
"Maybe a lot more," Scott tells him.
Different than the ones who just tried to set us on fire?" Liam asks.
"I think so, yeah," Scott nods, opening the door. Liam's steps falter. I can see the hesitance in his movements, the fear on his face.
Liam's new to all of this and suddenly he's thrust into this dangerous world where people are trying to kill him and his friends left and right? He's too young to be handling this. We all are too young to be handling this.
"Hey, you don't need to be handling this with us, Liam. Scott and I can handle this on our own," I gently tell him. His adam's apple bobs as he takes deep breaths.
Scott shuts the door and walks back over to Liam and I. He recognizes how Liam is feeling too. And we can't make him do this. "How about I take you home?" He offers.
"I'm not like you," Liam says, his eyes downcast.
"Not yet," Scott smiles supportively.
"I don't mean I'm not strong or I'm never going to learn how to be in control. I mean everything else," he sighs, finally meeting our gazes. "You and your friends try to protect everyone. Have you been doing this the whole time? I mean, how are you all still alive?"
