An Ode to Augustine of Hippo

It began with an apple.

Your friends pressured you to steal.

You just did it for the thrill.

Your teeth never pierced the peel.

Doing it made you wonder.

Why do we do the wrong thing?

Why do people still blunder,

When they can hear God's voice sing?

People are just born rotten.

Human nature is just bad.

God's goodness is forgotten.

When gold is to be had.

People want heaven on Earth.

They think there is no other.

Even you question God's worth.

Even you had a lover.

Force the people to believe.

That was your final answer.

Salvation we must retrieve.

War for God is no cancer.

Many became just like you.

Some say you are the winner.

I know that is not what's true.

You are the greatest sinner.
