I Went Under

I came across a rather odd sight.

A very hard image to describe.

A dog on two legs that was walking.

A cat beside him as a leashed pet.

How did this arrangement come about?

I asked the dog feeling quite puzzled.

He said it was natural order.

The cat was better off beneath him.

The cat looked up with the saddest eyes.

The dog asked the cat if he agreed.

The cat leapt with joy, "It's wonderful."

It's face shaped into an ugly smile.

The dog beamed with pride and they walked on.

I continued on my way as well.

Then I saw a man picking tree leaves.

He plopped then in his mouth and swallowed.

I asked him why he was doing this.

His lips curved into an ugly smile.

"It makes me feel like a million bucks!"

His body seemed to challenge his claim.

His eyes had dark circles around them.

His thinness caused his clothes to dangle.

His hair was unkempt,  face unshaven.

I shrugged my shoulders. "If you say so."

He turned back around and clawed the tree.

Trying to get every leaf he could.

I walked on and saw a strange woman.

She was standing inside a river.

I asked why she was standing in there.

Her eyes were closed and she swayed in the wind.

Instead of words she just hummed at me.

"Are you feeling okay?" I inquired.

Her finger tips touched the water.

She glided them along the surface.

A smile grew slowly along her face.

Her humming started to get louder.

"Everything seems so strange here," I said.

Her body swayed more aggressively.

Her humming became even louder.

Her hands splashed me as she spun around.

"I just want to understand," I said.

Now she fell back into the water.

She completely soaked me when she splashed.

I went into the water to see.

I looked all around and saw nothing.

Then a hand reached up and grabbed my foot.

Another grabbed my ankle, my thigh.

A fourth yanked me further by my belt.

"What is all this about?" I shouted.

A fifth and sixth onto my shirt.

A head slowly rose from the surface.

Her eyes glanced up into my eyes then.

"Okay," I said.

I went under.
