"What again?" "Jade! What's with you? Lunch with Daniel? The geek? You can't be serious!" "I know! I was too chickened out and uncertain with Carl--" "Uncertain with Carl?! Is that a joke?" Kelly almost shrieked to the whole classroom. We just entered the classroom, a room of 30 students, all with different faces and phases of life, and a room of ordinariness. No special features. I barely setteled my things on my desk-- I was on the second to the last row-- when they start pointing my unwise deed. "Fine! I know I was stupid to reject his invitation, but I am not yet ready!" I cried at them. "Ready? Ready for what? Then you pulled Daniel to lunch. You'll make him look stupid." Kim said. "How come?" I asked. "Well, the guy has a thing for you for a long time, you eventually turn him down, and now, this? Are you mad?" Sarah answered. Fortunately, Daniel had come over to pick me. "The teacher's not around, so I thought you may like to have an early lunch." He said. "See you later." I waved goodbye to the girls. He smiled at them politely. I rolled my eyes and pulled him.
"I must admit, I am surprise. Very. Thank you for the chance." I just nodded. Things are starting to feel uncomfortable for me. "So, what do you want to eat? My treat." He offered. "Oh no. You don't have to do that." I said humbly as I pulled my wallet out. "I insist, since this is the first time I am alone with you." "Oh." I blushed. "You look lovely when you blush." He said shyly. Really, it's very uncomfortable now. But it was nice that he was easy to please. I smiled to myself.
"Let's eat." I said. "Yeah, we should. I'm pretty hungry now. You hear my stomach rumbling?" I laughed. "Definitely." "What do you want?" He asid, pointing at the menu. "Burger, then mango juice. Fine with you?" I asked shyly. "Anything." He beamed at me.
We sat down on an empty table. I started the conversation. "You never get bored with those school books? I am a bookworm, but I never had such patience on them." I told him. "Oh, not really. They just keep me company at school. It's nice." "Oh." I realized he was having difficulties with friendship. We all think he's weird. We don't talk to him often. I suddenly felt bad.
We ate in silence for minutes, then I asked again, "Who is your bestfriend?" "Fred." He answered. "I see. Only him?" I asked again. "No. I have Jonah too."
The bell rang, and we walked back to class. He thanked me for the lunch. "No, thank you. For the treat. We both smiled.
