Kaitlin:
Clearing and cleaning tables.
Literally.
That's what Devlin pressured me into doing after killing the wyvern for me without even being asked to. He'd been looking for me to fill in at the Live Brew, a fae pub that was short on workers tonight. Apparently it fell on me to fill in and he allegedly had to step in to kill the wyvern to get me there quicker.
If he hadn't let me sell what I'd gathered to Bobby, The Live Brew and shop owner, I would've snapped. When I'd gotten there I'd been pushed to serve tables but quickly been removed from doing so because of my creepy smile.
My smile was not creepy.
I think.
I groaned as I scrubbed down another red walnut table when my phone vibrated. I hoped for another wyvern bounty but knew that Bobby wouldn't mention another one until after closing since he was down workers. I dug my cell out from my back pocket and took a calming breath. Devlin has been hovering to the left of me and criticizing my attention to detail when cleaning. I had a strong feeling he was exaggerating on purpose in order to see me lose it. I needed to refrain from snapping at him before he thought to dare to bring up the bathrooms.
He stepped closer to my left, caught glimpse of my screen and asked, "Why is the alpha calling you?
I settled on giving him an annoyed glare for not minding his own business as I answered, "Hello."
"My son's been poisoned by fae. How fast can you get here?"
"Uh-" I stuttered as my brain tried to reset itself. I'd been busy imagining unsuccessful ways of getting out of here but Devlin growled less than Alphas, "I'm not sure I'll be able to help." I said, hoping the Alpha would change his mind. Dread immediately started to fill me at what this all meant. If the fae poisoned Seth and he died, there was going to be another war. Who was I kidding, dying wasn't necessary. Not with the wolf's temper. Breaking the truce legally required a death but technically it didn't need one if one party wished it.
I recalled how big Seth was in wolf form and decided he likely had been in human form when attacked. Or did he initiate it?
"Bring someone who can." he snapped and surprisingly didn't hang up. He needed confirmation that I was coming and couldn't be certain I would if he hung up abruptly. After all I wasn't a wolf who was bound by his orders as Alpha.
I met Devlin's eyes and he nodded.
That good for nothing little-
I shouldn't have looked.
"I'll be there when I can." I answered.
"Twenty minutes maximum." Gabriel insisted.
"Sure. I'll fly." I joked partly because my nerves were setting in and part because yet another person was ordering me around. Gabriel hung up immediately. Maybe he wasn't in the mood for sarcasm or who knows, maybe, he crushed his phone in irritation.
The more pressing question was what fae was dumb enough to poison the Alpha's son? Brawl maybe, but poison?
"I'll find out who it is." Bobby offered, sneaking up from behind us or rather, only sneaking up on me. Devlin didn't jump at all.
"Come with?" I asked Devlin. He could identify the poison, call for a healer and possibly pick up a scent.
"Do you still plan on flying or should I-"
"Shut up." I cut him off, fought his teasing glare and failed. That all too familiar arrogant grin spread on his face. The exact grin I'd been trying to avoid.
