I stared at blond locks that were tied neatly into a small knot, and vacantly noticed that he had switched his grey shirt and blue jeans for black ones.
I already knew the answer but I asked anyways, "What are you doing here?"
His body jolted about a centimetre and he played it off with a half glance in my direction, "Scouting." he muttered.
Stella, who'd been standing ten feet from Bastian, turned fully to face me. Her expression was as empty as I hoped mine was. I took in her leather pants and the corset she had on.
"Lord Kellan sent us." Stella said forthcoming.
"I know but why aren't you at the meeting?" I questioned. They'd been there when we'd left. I had assumed that they were going to take their own vehicle.
Did Sethan send them to scout or were they acting upon themselves? The first didn't sound right. Sethan wouldn't risk scouting this early. He mentioned daytime tomorrow would be best as less vampires were likely to have a daylight charm due to the price. He was also calling for help from another pack to join us. They needed time to arrive, inform themselves and prepare.
"Do you normally not do what your mate orders you?" Bastian quipped.
At his remark, I decided to play dumb. "You're the only ones who can scout?" I crossed my arms.
"You're leaving your scent where they can find it." Bastian affronted.
"And you're not?"
He smiled and I remembered his power. Maybe he wasn't. I didn't know the extent of his power. But it was more likely that he wanted them to smell him and find him. I frowned at him. The sun was setting soon and I needed them gone.
"It works best when you ignore him. We've been sent to protect you. He also said we are to assist you with whatever you need." Stella took a step closer, "What do you need?"
"Why are you here?" I tried again.
Stella held up a hand to stop whatever counter Bastian had without a doubt cooked up, "We are scouting. We do not know you or your mate."
Do I trust them? If my niece was here and we found her and they brought word of it to the King... Would he ask questions about what she has become? He seemed indifferent towards the human farm. Would he care about a little girl? Probably not but he could help me find out how she got here. Help provide and soothe her cravings. But do I risk him having access to her powers? She likely didn't know what she could do so it wouldn't be a huge risk. On second thought, she'd somehow learned to raise bodies from the dead without formal instruction. Granted, they were bloodthirsty ghouls and not regular ones with most of the soul attached.
I took a risk. A bunch of werewolves were likely to scare my niece more than two vampires. They also already glare at me plenty.
"There's a fourteen year old girl who might or might not have been captured. She has fangs."
Bastian's jaw dropped, "He's turning people without permission?"
I shrugged and they exchanged glances.
We decided to split up.
Bastian was the one who found the footprints. Small ones that dragged occasionally like she couldn't hold herself upright and called us to follow him. The tracks led us away from compound and I relaxed a little. We wound up at a campsite that seemed abandoned. The blood that coated the grass and the edge of the trailer weren't a good sign.
