Kaitlin
I winced when Noah screamed in my ear, "Kate, we might have a problem."
In his defence, he wasn't actually screaming. But I'd been fast asleep and the sudden noise felt a lot like it. I already knew the answer but I inquired first regardless, "Are you dying?"
Noah answered me with a question, "No?"
I hung up.
My phone vibrated loudly again. This time next to my pillow where I'd dropped it instead of my nightstand.
I pressed green and braced for another attack on my eardrums. This time around, it's a lot more tolerable, "Are you sure you got all of the demons?"
That gets my attention, "Talk."
Noah dives in and explained how some out of town detective showed up with a body. Apparently this wasn't uncommon but him not being assigned to it examine it, or check over the results, has never happened. There were calling someone else from out of town to examine it.
According to him, the same detective that spoke to me about the bodies who's souls were collected by the hellhounds, should've been assigned as the head of this case. Not some out of town freshie. Like him, Detective Sanchez was also denied access.
"No. I'm certain there were only two demons. Plus, if the bodies matched the M.O then there would be no reason to restrict access. Get a second opinion sure, but not exclude you like that. Did you do something you are not telling me?" My gut twisted and I almost couldn't get the words out, "Did they catch on?"
"No. That's impossible. My magic is flawless and I went over them." Noah sounded confident, "Nothing has been triggered or removed."
Triggered? So Noah did set traps on the bodies he stole from under destress for the fae. I'd always wondered.
"Well, both demons are dead and they don't eat human flesh. It's something else." I didn't want to lie, "Unless it's a different type of demon."
"Other type?" he gulped.
"Yes but they wouldn't be able to have access to this world unless a portal opened." I considered the possibility, "I haven't felt anything nearby."
I tried to expand my senses for anything in my near vicinity in case I missed it. Maybe I'll go for a run tomorrow and cover more trajectory. If not a demon, perhaps, I'll catch evidence of something else.
"Get me access to the body they brought in and I can tell you more." I stated uselessly because Noah already knew that.
Noah tried to confirm, "Are you still coming tomorrow?"
"Yes." I replied, a weird feeling settling in my gut as my mind brainstormed what could be going on.
The fae had been quiet despite what the vampires had done. I hadn't asked Sethan about what was decided upon during the meeting. Was the council going to punish the vampires who let it happen or were they satisfied with the executions lead by the guild?
"Kate? You usually hang up on me by now."
I ignored Noah and shared an idea with him, "Check with Devlin. It's more likely the fae's handiwork than a demon."
"W-what?" Noah stuttered.
Did the idea really not occur to him? He was after all raised by humans so I gave him the benefit of the doubt. Not all fae did. It was a very small fraction. All werewolves ate flesh but I kept that glaring point to myself. Calling someone from another town for wolf bites was highly unlikely.
