"Why are we at Walmart?" Zach nagged, "You promised we'd actually go clubbing this time."
"At least there's no splattered organs this time." Nate mumbled.
"Way to jinx it." Zach scolded, shoulder bumping his brother.
I walked us past Walmart and in the direction of the warehouses.
Psychopaths? I was going to have to question Sethan about that. The two were more like adolescent teens in overgrown adult bodies.
I picked up a payphone and entered a sequence of numbers. If Roman was holed up anywhere. It'd be here. A place with a shit ton of witnesses. I waited as the wall to the right slid open revealing a passageway spiralling downwards. The twins oohed like little kids and shoved their heads through the thin opening to peer downwards. Without a word, they delved into a game of rock, paper, scissors which Zach happened to win with paper.
"Fuck yes." he fist pumped and darted forward down the steps.
Nate went second and Quinn followed closed behind me. The decision surprised me because usually the second in ranking took the back for protection. My first instinct with the twins might not far off after all.
We were six steps down when all three of them seemed to catch the sniffing bug. Nate threw a blank questioning glance at me and I wondered what he smelled. An anxious feeling settled in my stomach.
The club we were about to walk into wasn't like any other. It accepted all kinds of creatures and permitted all sorts of hobbies. Roman and Cyrus had gotten the brilliant idea of opening up their first chain when we'd tried to settled down in Texas. I hadn't been to this particular location before but Roman had described this one to me on multiple occasions in effort to get me to appear with him. He'd also assured me that Cyrus wasn't aware of this one.
My feet left the last step where the twins waited with bobbing heads. I could only make out soft vibrations but I was willing to bet they could hear every lyric clearly.
None of Roman's and Cyrus clubs were quite the same but like always, I wasn't quite sure what to say about it. The fae at the door had his green pebbled tongue down the throat of a dwarf that straddled his lap. They were supposed to be working the door but paid us zero attention. It didn't mean they couldn't sense us. I took the continued wet slurps as permission and pushed at the twins' backs.
The twins took a half step, caught off guard as they'd been completely in trance by the towering height difference between the two making out by the archway.
"I can't believe I'm saying this." I raised my voice over the metal music, "Stay close."
It earned two salutes and zero obedience. Zach was first to wonder off and find himself surrounded by four female hounds that looked identical from head to toe in fitted leather. He smiled like a kid in a candy store when one of them stroked his cheek and another moved to massage his shoulders. He looked hungrily at the other two who seemed to be eating him with their eyes.
"Zach!" I screamed in warning but Quinn pulled me to him. "No, they—" I bit my tongue before I admitted what hounds ate for survival. Why were they even out of the fae realm without Luigi or Devlin?
Nate drew my attention as he reappeared with two mystery cocktails in hand. He offered me one but all I could do was gape between him and his brother. Nate followed my double take.
"I got him." he exclaimed and pushed both drinks towards me.
I had no choice but to hold them. Quinn and I watched in silence as Nate went off to tug the hound that was pressing herself to Zach's back. She seemed to say something I couldn't hear and try to cling on Nate instead. Nate evaded with a firm bump of his hips and it earned him the attention of another hound, shorter with a more fuller chest but Nate was focused on his brother.
