"Lucian Kellan? Are you kidding me? No. A million times no." Quinn disagreed.
I looked up from the map. We had the location of where Roman was nabbed pinned, but there weren't any abandoned places to hide that many humans. There were also no buildings owned by vampires around there either, unless you went further out. Quinn had messaged Shaw to check, and Roman pointed out that if there was anything, it would be under a new vampire that wasn't registered or under a human. This made the likeness of finding it doubtful.
"Nobody said you have to come." I mumbled.
Quinn fixed me with a hard stare. I would've dismissed it if his beast wasn't evidently close to the surface as he rumbled, "Seth put us in charge of keeping you safe which means you aren't walking into the vampire King's territory defenceless."
"Right, I won't." I agreed, "Because you'll be there too, apparently. The great King himself won't stand a chance." I smiled and pictured Quinn going up against mighty Dracula, one of the comic book versions because the films weren't as scary.
The Lord of the Night was rumoured to be able to kill without touching, so Quinn's odds weren't high, but if Quinn's steps were quiet enough... Quinn flinched, making me realize that my smile was creepy. I covered my teeth and glanced back at the map. Roman's theory that the human hostages were likely underground seemed plausible. Unless... I forced my gears to turn. They dumped bodies there? No, Roman would've smelled that.
"Is she always like this?" Nate queried.
"It's because she hasn't killed in a while." Roman filled in unnecessarily and continued to examine the map.
They tensed. As did I till I remembered they outweighed me. I was a frail little thing that allegedly carried a toothpick sword, and wasn't a wolf or any kind of shifter. I pretended like Roman's comment was excessive and played indifferent. I didn't suffer from murder withdrawal. Figures that the shit starter wouldn't know any better and make a bad joke. Ironically, I used to find his confidence, and his strength that backed it, attractive.
"Relax, boys." I said, faking nonchalant, "The vampire King's minions will probably turn us away at the door. Think of it as going for a walk, or you can collar up and stay home." I winked at Zach, aiming the last part at him as a challenge.
For the first time, having stalker werewolves was starting to feel reassuring. Not that I'd ever admit that out loud. We were going to need all the werewolf witnesses we could get. Lord Kellan was more likely to believe us that way given that Augustus was fairly up the food chain with a mostly spotless record. The problem was getting Kellan to hear us out.
We really need those blueprints to the tunnels the vampires had utilized during the war.
"They're messing with us, right?" Nate asked Quinn.
Luckily, Roman ignored them, "He won't, Kate." Roman fixated on his wrist and lifted his sleeve to reveal an old silver watch. He unclasped it and tried to hide the light pink skin underneath. "Give him this and tell him what you saw."
I took the watch carefully, wondering what was special about it that would get the King's attention, "You're not coming?"
"If I do, my uncle will know and wrap things up or move them. If it gets back to him that some witch visited the King, he won't think much about it, but if someone recognizes me and tells him I was there..." Roman raised his brows for emphasis.
I nodded, "You can't come." I stared at Roman. I'd planned on only speaking when the King questioned Roman about possibly falsely accusing his uncle to overthrow him. "What if he doesn't believe me?"
