Kaitlin

Sparkling oval eyes trapped me behind the counter, "Dad said you two are dating." Her words were soaked with hope, "Is it true?"

Dating. My face heated as I recalled my hot make up session with Sethan last night. Long phone calls didn't constitute as dating but the man had bought me flowers.

I remembered Quinn's comment about me becoming her mother and realized that saying yes to her would hold a stronger meaning. Her pleading eyes didn't seem to oppose it but like usual, I went on the side of caution.

The best I could come up with was, "Sort of."

Maya's mouth opened, no doubt to question me further, when the shop bell sounded. I've never been glad to see Leon come in.

Her jaw dropped further as she struggled to close it, "I—I thought my dad scared you away?"

The small smile that graced Leon's lips disappeared at the mention of Sethan, "No. Still here."

Did she think Leon skipped town or something?

"Wait— you two—?" Maya pointed between the two of us.

I spoke hastily and regretted it when I'd finished, "Here's been staying with me."

Maya didn't miss a beat, "Dad's ok with that?"

"It was his idea." I filled in, knowing that I'd revealed Sethan's grave in which he'd partly already dug on his own.

"His?" Maya struggled, "If he's letting you stay here with his mate, doesn't that mean he trusts you?" she pointed at herself and we both watched the wheels turning in her head. "I'm the problem?"

Leon looked too stunned to respond. I was unsure which part of her statement rendered him shocked.

"No, that's not it." I blurted urgently but Maya didn't spare me a glance as she whipped out her cell. "No, don't—" I started.

"Shit. I can't call him. He'll drag me back—" Maya froze with the phone in her hands. The shop's bell sounded once more and she dashed behind an aisle, backtracked and ran behind the counter.

Behind me.

Adonis towered in with reminiscent backlit glow to his eyes.

Maya squished in closer behind me, "I should've come sooner."

I looked wide eyed at Adonis and found myself contradicting her, "No, you shouldn't have."

I tried to remove myself from in front of her.

I only ever seen Adonis solid faced or annoyed, never angry. The closest to happy had been the chortle he'd let out when I'd called them nudists. I could feel his beast and really wished I couldn't.

It was a miracle he'd only been giving me grunts.

He'd been running behind me?

No more morning runs for me.

Not when he's on watch.

I turned my head and whispered to Maya uselessly, "Don't get me involved in this."

Maya didn't whisper, "Dad accepted another heir from some pack to try to win me over."

I barely heard what she said. Did Maya not feel that or did she think she'd have enough time to get away while Adonis was plucking me off to the side?

My skin itched at his action and my voice dipped lower, "What do you want me to do?"

Maya straightened and I almost told her to duck, just in case.
