Light Amidst the Chaos

Ch 21

A/N: i know it doesn't happen this way in the comics so please don't clock me, m'kay? 😁

I sat down in one of Bruce's spinny chairs. Now that we know what Levin is possibly going to try and do, we can start formulating a plan. We know he's possibly trying to get Maverick because he's his grandson, and because he possibly has powers. We also think he may try and resurrect Charlotte.

If he was trying to resurrect her, he could just use a lazarus pit. I wonder why he isn't using it. I mean I get it, she could come back totally out of control and become his worst enemy. Levin wasn't that stupid. However, if he were to resurrect her he could totally manipulate her genetic makeup to the point of never getting the old her back. Either way, we lose her.

I was worried about Maverick having powers. I watched him from across the room as him and Dick were reading over a map. Well, Dick was reading the map, Maverick was more interested in the pictures on said map. I just prayed he didn't have powers and if he were to have them, they wouldn't be as powerful as Charlotte's were.

Both of my parents had powers, hence why I have powers. Levin was Charlotte's father and he has powers, but as for Charlotte's mother, it's unclear if she had them or not. If she didn't, maybe we'll get lucky and the genetics will skip over Maverick. At least that way it will put him in less danger if Levin finds he has no use for him. That could be good or bad.

"I got something on Julia, Charlotte's mother. I think you may want to look at it." I heard Jason's voice next to me.

I looked over at him and took the tablet from him. She died two months ago as well from a house fire. She was found burned to death in the debre. Fantastic, she's dead too. Now we can't go and question her about Charlotte and why she wasn't with her own family.

That's the piece I'm not grasping. Why did Julia and Levin give Charlotte to my mom and dad? Better yet, did the two give her away at all? I was so confused.

I kept scrolling through the information Jason obtained. Julia was a normal person, no powers evident. She was a Sunday school teacher and came from a small town in Kansas. She never had another child after Charlotte and seemed to indulge herself in her work. I still didn't understand why my parents had Charlotte.

I went to the medical records and found that the pregnancy and birth were normal, no complications. Julia and Charlotte both came out of it perfectly happy and healthy. What changed?

"Are there any adoption records?" I asked, looking up at Jason.

"Not that I could find." Jason replied, shaking his head. "I wish there was though. I'd like to know why Levin gave his own kid away."

"Auntie Eli, can I ask you something?" I heard Maverick's voice say.

I looked over at him. "Of course buddy. What's up?"

"Who came that other day?" He asked, his green eyes curious. "When Krypto took me?"

I bit the inside of my cheek and turned to completely face him. "Very bad people."

"Why did they want to hurt us?" He asked again, climbing into my lap.

I handed the tablet back over to Jason and held Maverick in my arms. "Because they want to get you."

"Why?" He replied, hugging me.

"I'm not sure." I honestly replied, hugging him close. "But I promise I won't let them get you."

"Were they looking for mommy?" He asked, lifting his head out of my shoulder.

"No, just you." I told him, brushing the hair out of his eyes.
