Alex grabbed his school books and carefully but quickly put them in his book bag. He's running late for school and if he doesn't hurry he'll miss the bus, and he's never late. He makes being on time a priority. He looks at his bedside clock to se how much time he has, only making his anxiety rise.
Three minutes until the bus gets here.
He looks at his desk and sees his unfinished biology homework.
Crap. He thinks. He quickly puts his homework in his folder, even though there's not really time for organization. He slides his folder in his book bag and slings it on his back and heads for the door, but a photo on the wall catches his eye as he goes down the hall.
He stops and stares at the photo of his little sister. She had blonde hair that was almost white, and eyes blue as the clear sky. She had the cutest little smile that could make your heart melt, missing on of her front teeth. She wore a white shirt with pink flowers on it, pink shorts, and a white bow in her hair. She loved bows.
About three years ago, she passed away due to cancer. The grief comes and goes in waves for Alex, and it's a different feeling each time. Sometimes it's regret, what if he wasn't a good enough brother while she was still around? What if he could have done more to spend time with his baby sister? Sometimes it's just a deep sadness, a while in his heart that use to be filled by his little sis. And sometimes it's anger. Anger that his parents are so casual about her death. They keep saying "she's with God now, she's home." But that didn't make it okay for Alex. When the church would pray for her health, they would always say "if it be your will God" and that didn't sit right with Alex either.
If God was really good, he'd still have a little sister. If God was really good and all powerful, he wouldn't have taken her away, he would have let her die. She was just a kid.
Alex shook his head to clear his thoughts. If his parents knew he thought something like that, if he even doubted God's goodness for even a second, they would be so disappointed in him, and he hates disappointing people, especially his parents.
He rushed out the door realizing he's about to miss the bus. He makes it just in time and hurriedly climbs on the bus and slides into his seat with his friend Reggie.
"You okay?" Reggie asks sensing something was off. He was almost late, which was a clue something was off, and he can see him bouncing his leg, a sign of his anxiety kicking in.
"Yep. I'm good." He says. "I just, it's been a rough morning." He pulls his book bag around in front of him to get out his bio folder to finish that homework.
"What are you doing?" Reggie asks.
"I didn't finish my bio." Alex says searching his bag with something to write with. "Shoot, man do you have a pencil?"
"You know what, I'll do you one better. I actually did my homework, you seem too stressed to worry about stupid biology homework right now, I'll just let copy mine."
"No, that's cheating." Alex says.
"So? It's not like it's a test. Besides she only takes it for completion anyways. Last homework assignment I just drew a bunch of doodles and I got a B-."
"That's not good enough for me though." Alex says. It's not good enough for his parents.
"Well to be fair she also wrote it would be an B+ but she took off because she just doesn't like my art. She's so mean. She wrote, don't be an artist when you grow up. Isn't that so rude!? And she wrote by my Han Solo picture that he wasn't even a good character! Who doesn't like Han Solo, he's the best! She said she doesn't even like Star Wars! Who doesn't like-"
