"Would you like to play a game?"
Nico tilted his head slightly, eyeing the monster (god? creature?) in front of him.
It had long legs with backwards knees, and was as tall as three or four Nicos. It had antlers that stuck up a couple feet, then at a 90 degree angle they bent opposite directions outwards much longer, coming to sharp points like a candy-cane sucked on too long. Those horns could impale anyone this being wanted them to. His entire body was as dark as a shadow, nothing clear and no detail standing out more than the other. Even his average (but much larger) human-like torso was indescribable by anything other than "pure darkness." The only thing that Nico could make out to identify this being was his eyes, missing. He could see straight up towards the night sky, and the forest behind them, through those eyes.
The being's voice broke the silence once more, a deep booming that made Nico think he was the only one that could hear it across all the landscape of trees, rocks and leaves in the forest they resided in. The being angrily demanded, "Answer me."
Nico sighed. Well, might as well go out this way if not any other...
"What kind of game?" he inquired. The being took the question as interest.
"An easy one. All you have to do... is follow me."
Nico lifted his eyebrows as the being moved to turn around, seeming almost 2D.
Nico piped up, "Are you leading me to the game, or is this the game?"
The being never responded, but Nico knew what he had to do: He followed anyways.
Once they reached their destination, it looked no different to where they were before. Crunched leaves, tall trees and a sky full of black. It was just another area of forest, so similar it could've been copy-and-pasted.
The being (beast? Nico still wasn't sure) in front of him turned around, his antlers and limbs switching sides being the only indication. Nico looked through his hollow holes for eyes, wondering if they were supposed to be like that or if another traveler just like him had done it some time ago.
"Here," the being boomed down at Nico, "is where the game shall begin."
"What game?" Nico repeated, almost irritated at the lack of transparency he was receiving.
"My game," the being responded, then continued on. "There are three rules: Don't leave the forest, don't yell, and don't eat the food."
Nico furrowed his eyebrows, What the Hades do that mean?
The being paused for a moment and then laughed, a cackling that sounded like the rumbling of Tartarus. Nico shifted on his feet, suddenly anxious as memories flooded his mind and the hairs on the back of his neck stood up, but he kept his face straight.
"You, tiny mortal-" the being began.
"Demigod," Nico corrected with a stern tongue.
"DON'T YOU DARE INTERRUPT ME!"
Now, Nico wasn't the type to take disrespect, but suddenly his mouth shut and all he could do was stare up into those missing eyes, intensely silent. He'd never heard a voice that deep, that nature-like, in all his life - it sounded as if the pits of Tartarus themselves were screaming. Who was the being?
Whoever he - it - was, continued. "If you can survive the night, then I will take you to where you need to go."
Nico swallowed. Pondering and pondering, he knew he didn't have any other choice.
"Okay."
The being smiled. Nico couldn't see it, but he could feel it, searing into his soul. It was almost painful.
"Goodluck, tiny mortal. I will see you on the other side."
