[Prologue]

Red.

Nico despises the color red.

It represents death, loss, and the beauty that murderers find in it.

The beauty that he finds in it--when it's inflicted on himself, of course, not anyone else.

Black.

People say it's a sad color, but all it does it keep the light at bay. Too much darkness can destroy you, but it's the same thing for light--you'll be falling into a trap.

Black, like the night, when Nico wakes up screaming. He'd rather feel the pain at night than in the day.

Black, like his eyes after a night of staying up late.

Black, like his hair, dyed from its natural red-brown color, to forget his past identity but never move on.

Black, a darker shade than red, to consume it. Black, like a raven consuming a red flower. Flowers are too delicate, too light.

Black, like Nico's broken parts, covering up his red scars.

Black, like Nico's empty dreams, and his bruises from being too brave.

Black. And red. Nico's life story.
