The school bell had just rung, signaling the start of the last afternoon classes for the week. As the other students chattered and went to their respective rooms, Tamara rushed out of the building, her backpack bouncing against her back as she sprinted towards her home. Her heart was pounding with anxiety and desperation. She had to come up with some money, fast.
When she reached her house, she immediately began rummaging through drawers, closets, and cabinets. She was looking for something valuable, something that the pawnshop would take in exchange for some quick cash.
After a few minutes of searching, Tamara's eyes landed on two boxes tucked away in the corner of her empty living room. She approaches it and takes a look inside. She recognized it immediately as the Nintendo Wii Supreme her parental figure from the US, Madam V, had given to her.
"Happy Birthday, Tamara," Madam V greeted her warmly.
Tamara eagerly tore off the wrapping paper and opened the box. Inside, she found a brand new limited edition Nintendo Wii Supreme, still in its packaging.
"Wow," Tamara's eyes went wide with amazement. "T-this looks expensive!"
"I always see you looking at it in the video game store whenever we go to the mall, and I thought you deserved a new console to enjoy."
Tamara couldn't contain her excitement as she pulled the console out of the box and examined it. It was sleek, shiny, and made out of solid gold, with all the latest features and a few games included inside.
"Thank you so much, Madam V!" Tamara thanked, tears streaming down her face.
Tamara hugged her maternal figure. She had never felt so loved and appreciated before by her adoptive mother, and the gesture meant the world to her. For the first time in her life, she felt like she had a real mother, one that cared about her and wanted her to be happy.
"You're welcome, sweetie," Madam V comforted her and caressed her back. "You're a good kid, Tamara. You deserve nothing but the best for your birthday."
"M-my sister and I used to play—"
"Well, they're not around to play with you anymore, aren't they?" Madam V told her, smiling.
"Y-you're right..." Tamara's face fell as she remembered the happy times she had spent with her adoptive sister will only served as nothing but a sad memory to her now.
"Why don't you set it up in the living room so we can play a few games together after dinner?"
Tamara blinked in surprise. She had never played video games with Madam V before, and the idea excited her.
"Really?" she had asked, her eyes wide.
"Really," Madam V had said, nodding. "I want to share this experience with you. We'll have our own little gaming night."
Tamara grinned from ear to ear as she set to work setting up the console. Madam had sat beside her, watching with interest as Tamara plugged in cords, installed software, and adjusted the settings.
Tamara's eye flinches upon remembering that moment. She remembered the excitement she had felt when she had first received the console. She had spent hours playing her favorite games with Zamantha and exploring virtual worlds.
But that was a long time ago. Now, she needed the money more than she needed the console, and Madam V, the one who gifted her the console, had left her. Moreover, she had no TV to play it and no one to play games with it.
