I didn't think it would happen to her. Chelsie's been my best friend since high school. Her parents brought her here to try to give her a human life. We became best friends once I figured out she had the same music taste as me.

We've been out of high school for a while. We decided to move in together. She always told me about the death of her kind, but I never thought it'd happen to her. It was an annual thing. Demons would randomly be selected to pass on, continuing their legacy by transferring their soul to a young demon. Almost like a guardian angel. Always with them.

I stared at her lifeless body. I knew the procedure, she made me do it a thousand times. I would need to pluck her horns off, they'd fall right off. I'd take her jewelry and put it all in a small box, arranged in a special way that was decorated with their own language.

I gently folded her hands across her chest and removed her rings. Once one was off, she became a demon again. I slowly pulled her horns off, not wanting to cause her pain, even if she was gone now.

I put the things into their holders in the box and closed it up with a red ribbon. I headed to Chelsie's purse and pulled out a small crystal. I held it in my hand with the box and said goodbye to her one last time. Once I came back, her body would be gone. "I wish to go to the demon world where Chelsie was from." I closed my eyes and felt a woosh of magic.

I opened my eyes to a dark sky and castle sitting right in my view. I was on the front steps. The two guards looked shocked. They rushed up to me holding their swords. "Who goes there?" one yelled out at me, staying back.

I looked down at the box. "I must speak with the Lord. I am human but I bring no harm." The guards looked at each other and then grabbed me. They led me inside the large castle.

The walls were a dark crimson. The floors were tiled in obsidian. They walked me down the long halls until we got to a room. "My Lord, could I have your presence?" a guard asked, shielding me from seeing inside the room.

"Let her in." A booming voice rang out. The guards shoved me into the room and I walked in looking down. I went to his feet and kneeled, holding the box out to him.

"Demon Lord, I bring my friend Chelsie Black to her home to rest. I have put everything together correctly. I only wish to attend her ceremony," I spoke loud enough for him to hear me and I stayed kneeled. He stood, his body towering over me. He was not the size of a human. But after a few seconds, he was.

"Stand, child." He ordered. I quickly stood up and realized I was crying. I tried wiping my eyes frantically but the man reach out and wiped my cheeks for me. He was mesmerizing. His gray skin complimented his black hair and hazel eyes. He was covered in tattoos, like Chelsie was. His horns were larger and curled slightly. He wore a crown, a bracelet around his horn. "You cared for her very much."

I nodded, sniffling. I wasn't able to speak. "She is in a good place, my child. She is helping another of her kind."

"I didn't want her to be chosen.." I whispered to myself, but he heard.

"I know. I can see you were good friends with her. But please, do not cry in my presence," the man said. He wiped the tears again and took the box from me. He turned around but I put my hand on his shoulder.

"Can I.. say goodbye one more time?" I asked. He turned and handed me the box again.

"I'll be outside," he said quietly. I waited for him to walk out before I fell to my knees and sobbed into my arms, holding the box close to my body. I tried to control my weeps but they weren't able to be stopped. After a few minutes, I calmed down and set the box on his chair. I got the crystal and held it in my hand, about to say the magic words to get me back home. But it was stolen from me, by the Lord.

"Please, let me return home, I wish to grieve." I looked at him with pleading eyes.

"I will let you come. On one condition." I perked up at this, willing to accept anything he told me. "You stay and become my wife."
