Aria's POV
"I just feel like I should be doing something." I say to Emily showing how useless I felt. I shouldn't be talking about this especially when it's Hanna and Emily's going away party but Spencer was always on my mind and now that she was in hospital in a coma it was nearly impossible for me to get her out of my head. It had been two weeks since Spencer had been stabbed and although her physical wound was making a full recovery she was still locked in a coma. Mr Hastings was a total wreck he never left his house and if he did it was to go to the hospital to visit his daughter. He looked like he was in a bad way and I didn't feel much better than he did. "Aria there is absolutely nothing you or anyone can do. We just have to give Spencer time for her brain to wake up, she has so much stuff in there it might take her awhile but, she's Spencer Hastings, and I know she'll figure it out whether she's conscious or not." Emily reassures me. I try to take on board some of Emily's hope but it's hard when you live with someone who always used to say 'Hope breeds eternal misery' I've kind of given up on hope and skipped right to despair. Emily had been a good solid friend through this whole disaster. Hanna, on the other hand, was having a difficult time coming to terms with the whole thing. She blames me. I can tell from the moment that I told her what had happened, she got a glint in her eyes and I knew that she blamed me. She never said that of course but I knew that's how she felt because I felt the same way. Emily had stayed a few nights since having an empty space in the bed was so depressing but her college day was arriving and it was arriving fast so was Hanna's and they had to pack. We had arranged the going away party months ago. When I say party it was basically just the four of us staying in for a sleepover and watching a couple of movies but now that there was only three of us it didn't feel right. I was sitting on the couch with Emily beside me while we waited for Hanna to show up. "I know." I say dismissively. "I just really wish she would wake up."
"She will, I promise." Emily squeezes my hand and I look up at her. We're interrupted by a knock on my apartment door. I walk over to the door and open it to reveal Hanna looking very stressed.
"Sorry." She mutters as she pushes past me. It wasn't in an aggressive manner but I could tell something was bothering her.
"What's wrong Hanna?" I ask after shutting the door.
"College has got me really stressed." Hanna sighs before throwing herself down on the couch. I saw her whisper something under her breath but I didn't want to question her about it.
"I can't believe you guys are leaving in two days." I say crossing into the kitchen to fetch the alcohol that I knew Hanna would be wanting.
"I wish we had longer." Emily replies shifting over so I can sit between them.
"Gimme." Hanna says reaching her hands out and wiggling her fingers in a grabbing motion for the alcohol. I hand her the bottle of vodka and watch as she takes a swig from it I could tell that she was going to get drunk fast tonight.
"Is something else bothering you?" I ask somewhat suspiciously to Hanna.
"Other than the fact that our best friend is in hospital in a coma? Nope, I'm just dandy." Hanna says sarcastically and the comment feels like she just slapped me across the face.
"Hanna." Emily warns but I shake my head.
"No you're right Han, we shouldn't be sitting here having a good time while Spencer is in the hospital." I stand up with Emily and Hanna's heads snapping up to watch me. I rush into the bedroom and grab my guitar that I hadn't played in so long and then reentered the living room.
"What are you doing?" Hanna inquires her eyes following me as I frantically search for my car keys.
"I'm going to see her and I'm going to sing her a song." I reply still searching for my keys.
"Aria I'm not so sure that's such a good idea." I can hear the worry in Emily's voice but I ignore it.
"I'm with Aria, I want to go see her." Hanna stands up which makes Emily stand up with her. I find my keys hidden under a magazine - I don't even know how they got there. I could feel the butterflies building in my stomach at the thought of going to see Spencer even if she was unconscious. Hanna is practically following my every step that I was surprised she hadn't tripped me up and Emily was swiftly trying to keep up with Hanna and I. We reach my car which I toss my guitar in the backseat next to Hanna while Emily and I take the front. "Are you sure Aria?" Emily asks from the passenger seat her voice dripping with concern.
"Of course she's sure Em." Hanna answers for me and I nod just to add extra confirmation. I love Spencer and even if she was unconscious I wanted to see her and hold her hand. I remember the first time I had sang to Spencer she told me that the birds had stopped just to listen. I didn't sing often and I still don't know how she had convinced me to sing in front of her but she told me that I should do it more often because I had a beautiful voice. So I wanted to sing for her now. I just hoped that this was a good idea. The hospital was quiet as usual. I make my way towards Spencer's room with Emily and Hanna in tow. I knew the way pretty much off by heart by now since I had visited as much as I could. I had my guitar strap slung over my back and my guitar was on my back as I walked down the hallway. I got some curious glances from the nurses and doctors some people were looking but most just looked away. We reach her room and I slowly open the door it creaks a little on its hinges. I see the sight that breaks my heart every time I see it. Spencer was lying in the hospital bed with a tube that was feeding her oxygen in her mouth, she had a IV in her arm which was filled with water and she had a heart monitor attached to her finger which emitted a slow steady beep showing her heartbeat. I sit in the chair opposite Spencer and take her hand in mine. I could already feel tears rushing to my eyes but I fought them back. "I'm here Spence." I whisper before sitting back and pulling my guitar to my front. I start to play the chords to 'Lego House' because I loved the song and thought that Spencer would love to hear it. Hanna and Emily were stood behind me and I could feel their worry from where I was sitting. "I'm gonna pick up the pieces and build a Lego house, If things go wrong we can knock it down." My voice was shaking a little at the beginning but soon it smoothed out. "There's one thing on my mind, It's all for you." I continue through the song letting my emotions pour into the songs lyrics. "If you're broken I will mend ya and keep you sheltered from the storm that's raging on, now." I play the last few chords and sing the last words. "And out of all these things I've done, I will love you better now." I stop my hand still resting on my guitar when I felt someone place their hand on my shoulder.
"That was beautiful Aria." Emily says softly and I smile slightly because I know that Spencer would have said the same.
"I didn't even know you could sing." Hanna muses from behind me I can hear her smirk in her voice. I reach my hand out and place it on Spencer's when I feel it twitch slightly. I freeze completely and stare at Spencer's hand which mine was resting on top of.
"Did you guys see that?" I ask my voice tight.
"What?" Hanna asks oblivious and confused by my question.
"Her hand just moved." I say turning to look at my friends. Hanna was looking at me surprised but Emily had a sad expression.
"That could have been anything like a trapped nerve or something." Emily says. Where was her hope now? I definitely felt Spencer's hand move. "We should go guys." Emily walks towards the door and Hanna follows closely behind her. I reluctantly stand up and place a soft kiss on Spencer's forehead before I start towards my friends who are waiting by the door. We were about to leave when I hear a raspy voice call out "You missed."
