5 Years Later
Spencer's POV
"Are you ready for tomorrow?" Hanna places her hand on my shoulder causing me to jump. I hadn't even heard her come in.
"Yeah, why wouldn't I be?" I reply shuffling over so she could sit beside me. I'd taken Hanna up on her suggestion five years ago. After we both graduated college, we moved to New York and we both got jobs. I was a lawyer at a big law firm but I wanted to start my own - start my own law firm and build it up from the ground. But I was still pretty fresh out of college, so, I had decided to try and pace myself. Hanna worked at some fashion company that I didn't really know but she said that it was going to open a lot of doors for her and I believed her. "I think you know why." Hanna says knowingly. I sigh I knew what she was referring too, or rather, who she was referring to.
"It happened five years ago, I think I'm okay." I say trying to sound casual but coming off as a little nervous.
"You haven't seen her in five years either." Hanna looks at me trying to read my emotions. I hated it when she did that, it made me feel a lot more venerable than it should. "So what about Alex?" Hanna asks. Alex was my girlfriend, we'd only been together for about three months but to Hanna that was a big deal since my relationships didn't normally pass the five week mark.
"What about Alex?" I ask frowning.
"C'mon Spence, are you taking her or not?" Hanna was starting to sound bored. She was obviously catching on that I didn't want to talk about the subject but I knew that she wouldn't drop it.
"No." I say firmly. "That would be awkward and my dad would want to meet her..." I shiver at the thought and Hanna laughs.
"So what's the plan if we see her?" Hanna asks.
"Han, we're going to a reunion, the chances are, we will see her." I roll my eyes enthusiastically at her and she hits my shoulder playfully.
"If everything starts to go south you whistle and I'll lift my top up to distract everyone." Hanna jokes. I laugh picking up my cup of coffee. It was nice living with Hanna and having a friend around, especially a friend like Hanna, who I knew was always there for me.
"Alright, what's plan B?" I ask playing along with her joke.
"If plan A fails then drop whatever your holding and get the fuck outta there." Hanna says stealing my cup from me. I laugh again at Hanna's ridiculousness. Aria had done exactly what I had told her to do which was to not talk to me, or text me, or call me, or even to ask about me. We fell completely out of touch and when Hanna and I moved away from Rosewood I cut all connections to the town, sadly, that included Emily. Who knew what Aria was doing now? What her job was? Hanna hands me my cup back and I take it staring blankly into space distracted by my thoughts. I haven't talked to Aria for five whole years and tomorrow at the reunion I still wasn't going to talk to her. "Spence?" Hanna waves her hand in front of my face.
"Huh?" I grunt shaking my head and the thoughts out of my mind.
"Alex is calling, should I tell her you're not home, since clearly you're not?" Hanna was being funny but the small crease in her brow gave away that she was worried. I hold my hand out for the phone and quickly answer.
"Hey babe." I greet.
"Hey, you left your glasses at my place, I'm pretty sure you need them." Alex's voice responds from the other line.
"I have my spare ones." I look at the coffee table where my glasses were lying surrounded by my work papers.
"Oh, okay, have fun tomorrow but not too much fun." She jokes and I laugh slightly at her statement.
"Don't worry I'll be fine." I look at Hanna frowning as the girl gives me the thumbs up for no apparent reason. "You sound like Hanna." I say and Hanna frowns at me now changing her thumbs up to a thumbs down. Alex laughs down the line.
"Then Hanna is one smart girl." Alex replies.
"I'll talk to you tomorrow okay?" I ask wanting to get into bed already. I didn't feel well with the idea of seeing Aria in the first place - I didn't need anymore added stress.
"Yeah, that's fine, love you." She says. I feel my throat tighten at the two words. I'd never said them before to anyone other than Aria but now would be a good time to start.
"Love you too, bye." I hang up and Hanna stares at me in shell shock.
"Did you just say love you too?" She questions poking my side. I roll my eyes at her again.
"What are we twelve?" I ask sarcastically. My first kiss was when I was twelve and it was with Aria.
"That's huge Spence." Hanna compliments.
"I dunno." I shrug my shoulders. "I don't know if Alex is the right one for me." I glance down at my knuckles that were once covered in blood and broken in multiple places after I had punched a concrete wall repeatedly.
"Spencer you have said that about every girl you bring back to the apartment. Now, I know that some are just one night stands but you have been with Alex for a long time. I think that maybe you're just jittery about tomorrow and seeing Aria." Hanna says. I tense at the mention of her name. I hadn't said her name out loud in almost five years and Hanna had been so careful as to not say her name around me but now she had.
"I think you're right." I confess sitting up right. "I think I need to sleep."
"Alright, I'll see you when you wake up." Hanna calls after me. "Love you!" She adds and I smile to myself. I had zero problems saying that back to Hanna.
"Love you too Hanna-Bear." I reply with a wave over my shoulder. I shut the door to my bedroom before collapsing on my bed. Tomorrow was going to be a long day.
