"Momma!"

A little girl who was only twelve years old crumbled on the floor next to the bleeding woman. The woman who cared so much for her was now gone, in a messy puddle of deep red that stained the girls hands and made the woman's dark hair sticky. She screamed and cried until her lungs felt like they would give in and burst, too much for her to hold in.

"We have to go" The man grabbed her sticky red hand, pulling her to her feet with a stone cold expression as he glanced to the woman on the floor, blank eyes staring back at him. His expression faltered slightly before snapping back to focus with the urgency of their situation. In one hand he held the little girls smaller hand, guiding her up to the bathroom in a hurry while his other hand held a weapon that he regularly used for hunting.

"Let's get you cleaned up" he suggested, running the warm water in the bathroom sink and lathering her hands with soap, helping her to wash away the pain. Her tears fell silently, no more cries left within her. "Cassie, I need you to listen to me carefully" he knelt in front of her, hands on her shoulders to get her to look at him. She spared him a small nod to let him know she was listening and he dropped his hands to take her shaking one's again.

"I need you to pack your bag, only bring what you need like we've discussed before." He stressed his point clearly to make sure she understood what he meant, the duo having prepared for this moment since the end of the world began a few weeks ago. The disease was rapidly infecting others, but they refused to leave their home without answers to preventing further infection, now they had no choice, all hope was gone.

"Where are we going?" She asked, voice small and a frown etched into her usually bright features that had since grown dull and faded.

"We are going on a little camping trip for a while" He said, trying to be positive for her while not knowing what was to come next.

"Okay"

"Okay? You can do that for me?" He clarified gently.

"Yeah" she nodded again.

"Good, I'm going to pack my bag, but I'll meet you at the bottom of the stairs in fifteen minutes, when this timer goes off" he set the timer on her green camouflage watch to make sure she knew when the time was up. Letting go of her small hands he opened the bathroom door, making sure she got to her room across the hallway before he rushed back downstairs.

Glancing outside of her window the small girl nervously rubbed her left arm which had felt like it was weighted down with something. The groans outside made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up, the few monsters below walking around mindlessly.

"Cas, you ready!" The man called up to her from the bottom of the stairs, just as her watch beeped.

"Coming!" She called back, pulling her school bag over her shoulders and securing it. She jogged down the stairs, glancing towards the blanket that was laid in the living room, a lump hidden under it with a deep red soaking through the fabric.
