. . .
. . .
"It's so quiet." Carol commented, her and Carl standing by the gate waiting for the others to return. "It's easy to forget how loud the world used to be. I used to complain about it all the time. Traffic, construction, car alarms, noise pollution. Oh. What I wouldn't give for the sweet sound of a jumbo jet." She looked up at the sky with a thoughtful smile.
"It'd be even sweeter if we were all on it." Carl agreed with his own smile.
"Your mom was proud of you." Carol reminded him with honesty, think of how much Lori would have loved to see Judith and Carl grow up.
"For what? Being mean to her?" He looked down in shame.
"No, you can't think about that."
"It's all I think about. That and protecting Cassie" He told her his truth. "Please be them." Carl looked up, seeing a car approaching.
"It's them. Hurry." Carol rushed to open the gate. Carl opened the second gate while Carol closed the first one.
"Drive 'em up. I'll meet you there." Rick instructed the others as he got out of the car by the gates.
"Okay." Maggie nodded, climbing into the drivers seat.
"Thank God." Rick knelt down to hug his son close. "Where's Hershel?" He pulled back to asked his very happy son.
"He's in the cell block."
"Where's Daryl?" Carol asked instantly when she noticed he wasnt in the car. Carls face fell as reality hit him like a slap to the face, realization crossing over him.
"It's all right. He's alive. We ran into his brother. They went off." Rick told Carol, trying to ease her worry's.
"He left? Daryl left?" She asked, not wanting to accept it. "He's gone? Is he coming back? What are we gonna tell Cassie?" She spiralled with worry.
"Hey. I'll tell her, don't worry. And Carl, you're going to need to support her just like she's supported you" Rick held Carols shoulder as she started to tear up before he turned to his son with cautious words.
"I will. And Oscar?" Carl asked next.
"No." Rick said, shaking his head. Carl locked up the gate while Rick hugged Carol, comforting her through the loss. They made their way up together, Rick having a hand on each of their backs for support for what they were walking into.
Up in the courtyard Maggie hugged her father in greeting, pulling back slightly to look for someone. "Where's Cassie?" She asked nervously.
"She's inside with Emily and Judith, why?" Beth wondered as Hershel looked Maggie over for any signs of injury.
"Daryl didn't come back with us" Maggie informed them.
"Take your sister inside." Hershel told Beth, seeing Maggie needed some rest. Beth diverted to hug Rick in greeting when the others joined them before she took her sisters hand and lead her inside.
