Expect the Unexpected (Jemily)

Chapter 22

Emilys POV

"Hey... while we're here do you want to go look at some clothes?" I ask Danielle, she didn't have many when she came to the house

"No" she whispers and I nod, we could always just do some shopping online later

"Momma JJ!" The three of us heard and a second later Lily was running right into JJ who wasted no time in picking her up

"Oh my goodness! Look at you" JJ smiles and holds lily close to her while Danielle let go of my hand and looked at me confused

"Mommy Emmy!" Lily says happily and reaches for me and I take her from JJ

"Lily baby where is Mary?" JJ ask and lily shrugs

"At home maybe?" She says to us and we frown and look around to find someone who is missing a child

Just then an older woman walked over to us with a frown

"Lillian!" She scolds and lily just hides her face into my neck

"Hi, im JJ, we were Lily's past foster placement... are you a friend of Mary's?" She ask and the woman scoffs

"No, she's just my daughter" she explains and JJ looks to me even more confused  we didn't know Mary's mother was around

"Come on Lily we have to go" she says and lily shakes her head

"Don't wanna" she whines and holds onto me tighter

"Now lily. We have to go get your mother" she says and lily frowns but nods and looks to Danielle

"Who's that?" Lily ask me in a whisper as I set her down

"That's Danielle, she's staying with us for a while. Can you say hi?" I ask and she waves at Danielle

"Hi" Danielle smiles at her and Lily quickly goes to hug JJ

"Bye bye" lily tells us all and walks away with the woman from Earlier

"You okay?"  I ask JJ, I know she had better dealt with losing lily but I know it still bothers her and seeing her now hurts

"Yea.... Yea I'm okay" she says and I nod and look to Danielle who was staring ahead at nothing

"Come on hun" I say softly and she follows me as I follow JJ around the store

We quickly finished and headed home, it still worried me about how quiet both of my girls were being

I knew why JJ was upset but I was confused on Danielle,

When we got home she helped us carry things in then immediately went to her room

Once JJ and I put everything away I walked over to her and gently pulled her into my arms

"Em I'm fine" she tells me but I don't let go, she can say that all she wants to

"Okay," I say and kiss her head and we just stand together for a few moments

"I know you miss her" I say and she nods

"Yea, but she looked okay, she looks like she is still at a healthy weight, seeing her was good but it made me just miss her all over again." She tells me and and steps back with a smile

"We know she's okay now, and Lea still knows to call us if anything is wrong" I say and she nods

"You're right" JJ smiles and kisses me softly

"You should go check on Danielle, she seemed more off than usual after we seen lily" she tells me and I nod

"I noticed that too.... I'll be back love" I tell her and kiss her again before walking to Danielle room, knocking before I walked in like always

I was expecting to find her either with her nose in a book or on her phone but she was sitting by the window in her sweatshirt

"Sweetheart" I say softly and sit on her bed and she looks to me briefly before turning back to the window

"Can you come sit?" I ask her and she sighs and rolls her eyes but comes to sit next to me

"Talk to me sweet girl,  what's going on up here" I say and tap the side of her head gently and she just shrugs but she does lean into me and I smile

"That little girl.... She was your last foster placement right?" She ask me and I nod

"She's the one you wanted to adopt?" She ask me and I nod, I wasn't quite sure where this conversation was going

"Yes... we were going to try but it didn't work out" I say and she nods and starts to spin my wedding ring around my finger

"JJ really likes her" she comments

"Yea.... JJ was really attached to her and Lily having to leave was really hard on her" I explain and Danielle nods, still just spinning the ring on my finger

"I don't think she likes me very much" Danielle whispers and I sigh and move back on her bed so I could sit against the wall

Danielle looked like she was about to cry when I moved away from her and it hurt my heart, I would never take comfort away from her

"Hey, I'm just getting more comfortable, come here lovely" I say and she smiles slightly and moves up and lays her body across me and I rub my hand up and down her back

"JJ does like you, I promise. She doesn't know how to talk with you... she actually thinks you dislike her. But she also knows it's a little more difficult for you to open up so she wants to take it slow with you" I explain to her while I continue to rub her back

"Oh." She mumbles and I don't respond,

"Do you think the two of you could work on that?" I ask and she nods

"You're safe... JJ is safe too?" She ask in a small voice and I smile

"She is... JJ is very safe. And I'm so glad you think I am" I say and rolls over and hides her face in me and I move my hand to her hair

"What if I go talk to JJ and we can get a movie set up and watch a movie together?" I suggest and she nods and sits up

"What movie are you thinking?" I ask and she shrugs

"You pick" she says and I nod and walk out of her room to find JJ on the couch with a book

"Hey... Is she okay?" She ask me and I nod

"Yes... how do you feel about a movie?" I ask

"That sounds fun, is she coming?" JJ ask me and I nod and go to make some popcorn

"Can you pick a movie off of  Disney plus?" I call out to JJ

"Sure babe" JJ replies and just as I returned to the living room with popcorn Danielle came out of her room and walked to meet us

"I chose Moana, hope that's okay" JJ tells us and I sit down on one end of the couch and Danielle sits right next to me so she could lean into me and JJ sat next to her

We started the movie and JJ grabbed the blanket off the back of the couch and laid it over Danielle

"Thank you" she whispers

Once again Danielle fell asleep on me before the movie was over and JJ looked over at us and smiled

"She said she's going to try with you... she was worried you didn't like her" I tell JJ and she frowns

"I didn't realize that's how she felt. But I'm glad she is going to try."
