ANNABETH

⋆⁺₊⋆ ☀︎ ⋆⁺₊⋆

"You cannot just leave the camp all night without telling anyone," Chiron scolded, but he really just sounded more exhausted than anything. "In times as dire as this, it is dangerous, Annabeth."

"I promise I can handle myself," I said gently. "I understand that you're worried-"

"To put it lightly," he mumbled.

"But I know how to keep myself safe," I promised. "I'm almost seventeen. I'll have to leave pretty soon anyways, and besides, I was with Tempest the entire time. And she's good at-"

"Pardon?" Chiron's horse legs began to shift nervously and his tail flicked. "You told me someone was taking you driving. Did you mean Tempest?"

"Well, yes," I said awkwardly, realizing I had given myself away on accident. "And we did go driving. And I did really well! She said I just need to work on my turns and-"

"You left the camp overnight with your girlfriend." I clamped my mouth shut. "Without asking for my approval."

"I am asking for your forgiveness."

"Annabeth-"

"Hey, I need a license, right?" I prodded Chiron. "One day, I want to be able to drive myself to Olympus instead of relying on taxis, subways, and Tempest's availability."

Chiron raised an eyebrow. I didn't really enjoy how this situation felt. It was quite rare for me to need a stern talking-to, and even rarer that I got punishments. In fact, I'm pretty sure I didn't have to be punished- by Chiron- since I was about nine or ten. "What were you really doing all night?"

"Driving."

"Do not lie."

"Okay, we drove for like, three hours," I promised.

"And the rest of the night?"

I felt a horrible wave of embarrassment, and couldn't bring myself to look at Chiron anymore. He hung his head, and it made me realize he wasn't used to thinking about me... like a sixteen-year-old girl. Usually, I think he saw me as a war strategist, or a quest leader, or just as a kid at a summer camp. "There is a reason we have rules advising against two campers alone together, Annabeth. I understand you're a teenager-"

"Oh gods," I mumbled.

"-And teenagers have hormones-"

"Can you just give me a chore and let this go?"

Chiron rubbed his eyebrow. "Clean the stables for three days."

"What?! Because I hung out with Tempest overni-"

"Three days," he insisted. "But first, we need a head counselor meeting."

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" I ran in front of him. "That's not fair! You catch campers doing way worse things!"

"In the confines of the camp," Chiron reminded me. "What you did was reckless. It is less about the act and more about disobeying my rules and endangering yourself." I glared at him. "You feel it more strongly because you are not used to it, but discipline is not unavoidable, Annabeth."
