My dead brother, Jeremiah, was an absolutely monster on the field. The reason?
I'm pretty sure he was an asylum patient during the Victorian era.
He'd just start screaming in his English accent and wailing on monsters with his bare fists. None of us really knew how to approach him. He didn't respond to us, or other ghosts, or monsters. He didn't seem to respond to anyone. But, he ran, and part of his hair blew back to show off his bald spot, and he'd slaughter a monster in some mad-scientist, ingenious way that really showed he was Athena's son.
It's almost unsettling to fight side-by-side with my dead siblings. It puts how long the gods have been around into perspective. You've got Socrates running around with a chiton and a big stick, but, there's also some guy here with a really bad perm and an ugly silky shirt. And they have the same mom. And they're half-brothers. Except one is two thousand years older than me, and the other is fifty years older than me. Me, another child of Athena.
You can understand why I was a little spooked.
Unfortunately, ghosts can only do so much. At the end of the day, they're about as capable as us demigods. They can only fight so many monsters at once. As the battle wore on, our defenses kept crumbling to ruin. We were being pushed back rapidly, no matter how hard we tried to keep Kronos's forces away from the Empire State Building.
The Hunters had set up a defensive line on 37th, just three blocks north of Olympus. To the east on Park Avenue, Jake Mason and some other Hephaestus campers were leading an army of statues against the enemy. To the west, the Demeter cabin and Grover's nature spirits had turned Sixth Avenue into a jungle that was hampering a squadron of Kronos's demigods. The south was clear for now, but the flanks of the enemy army were swinging around. A few more minutes and we'd be totally surrounded.
Me and two of my siblings- Malcolm and William Wallace (yeah, I know)- were trying to hold off a Hyperborean, but we're only so tall, as compared to a giant.
I heard shouting up above and briefly flicked my eyes up. I only saw a black shape dart by, but then I saw Tempest jump onto the giant's head. When the giant looked up, she slid down his face, punching his eye as hard as she could in the process.
"OOWWWWW!!" The giant staggered backward, holding his eye with his hand.
Tempest landed on the pavement and immediately started to run. The Hyperborean breathed a cloud of white mist, and the temperature dropped. The spot where she'd landed was now coated with ice, and she was covered in frost like a sugar donut.
I banged my sword on my shield. "Hey, ugly!"
The giant bellowed and turned toward me, exposing the unprotected back of his legs. Percy blew by on Blackjack and stabbed the giant in the back of the knee. Rather than crumble to dust, the giant froze. Literally froze. From the point where Percy stabbed him, cracks appeared in his body. They got larger and wider until the giant crumbled in a mountain of blue shards.
"Thanks," I said, trying to catch my breath. "The pig?"
"All gone," Tempest said, "and we activated some automatons on the way."
