I remember. Walking out of the hospital with Sarah and Dalton, hand in hand.

"Where are mommy and daddy?" I asked.

"They're in a better place now," Sarah replied solemnly.

"Don't worry, kiddo," smiled Dalton, messing up my hair. "You're with us now."

I hadn't understood then. But I do now.

2 years later

"Sarah, Sarah!" I sobbed, shaking her bloody arm. "Sarah, wake up!"

She didn't respond. She didn't even breathe. I didn't know what was happening. All I knew was that we were home, Dalton was at work, I heard a shrill scream, and I had come running in. This was what I found.

Sarah lying on the ground, blood covering her body, immobile, seriously injured. Blood was pooling on the floor, from a wound out of sight. The metallic smell was starting to make my head whirl, but even so, I stayed next to Sarah, the woman who was as good as my mom.

When Dalton came home from work, I was terrified, thinking that he would blame me for Sarah's death. He burst through the door and stood there, shocked speechless. Then he rushed over to me and Sarah to check what happened before scooping me up and taking me outside.

"W-w-what happened t-to S-S-S-Sarah?" I stuttered through tears.

"Well, I don't know! You tell me, you were right there!" Dalton snapped.

"I w-walked in when I heard a s-scream and Sarah was lying on the g-ground l-like that," I cried.

"Well, why didn't you call 911?" Dalton asked.

"I don't have a phone!" I wailed in response.

"It's all your fault," Dalton hissed.

Present day

"WHY ARENT YOU UP YET, YOU LAZY BRAT?!?!?" bellowed Dalton.

Ever since Sarah died, he's been so violent and I'm basically a punching bag to him. He stomped his way over to me, picked me up with one arm, and threw me down on the floor.

"Get up. Now," he spoke. "Go to school."

I did what he said, though I was aching all over. He wouldn't let me eat or drink either, so the only time I could get something inside me was at school. I quickly got dressed, grabbed my bag, and limped out the door. While I waited for the bus at the bus stop, a big black Mercedes rolled up. The window opened. The lady inside was very beautiful, with thick brown locks of hair framing her face and dark golden eyes.

"Hello, dear," she greeted me. "Are you going to school? Why haven't you got a jacket? And why is your face bruised?"

I didn't know what to say. Dalton had told me never to, under any occasion, tell anyone about what he did. If I did, he would beat me.

"Um... I fell," I lied, averting my eyes.

She sighed, as if she didn't believe me.

"What school do you go to?" she questioned.
"Willowpark Elementary School. My teacher is Miss Katie," I replied.

"Ah. I will be Miss Katie's assistant for a few weeks, so hop on. My name is Esme," she smiled at me.

"Thank you so much!" I smiled, jumping on her car.

At school, Esme took me with her to the office, then to class. Luckily, the day flew by to me, and before I knew it, Esme was taking me home. The door seemed locked, so Dalton wasn't home.
"No one's home," I said.
