When I woke up, I was sat in the same place, propped against a workbench. I looked up to see Leo asleep on the dragon, who's wings were now fully attached. I stood up and yawned, before walking over to them. I climbed up the dragons side and shook Leo awake. He had bags under his eyes, poor guy probably stayed awake for most of the night. Leo sat up groggily and looked at me. "Oh hi," He said, yawning.
"Hey," I said. "We need to go." He sighed.
"Can't I just have five more minutes?" I looked at him, unimpressed. "Fine." He muttered. "Hey Festus, you awake buddy?" The dragon snorted. "I'll take that as a yes." Leo wriggled his way up the dragon's body so he was on a sort of saddle area. He looked down at me after a solid minute of getting there, I shrugged and just walked up. He huffed. "Show-off, I just have bad balance." I laughed.
"Let's just go." I said.
Leo turned and patted the dragon's side. "Festus, we need to get back to the camp." He said. The dragon made a rumbling noise and headed towards the entrance. Festus touched his snout to the wall and the lines of fire spread once again; the door swung open. "He really could have just done that," Leo said. "Why did we have to figure out how to open it?" I snorted. The dragon stepped outside into a clearing and looked back to make sure we were both on his back. Then he spread his wings and launched himself into the air. I immediately grabbed Leo as I started to slide backwards.
"Oh gods, a little warning next time?" I said glaring at the back of the dragon's head. Festus made a whirring sound which I guessed was him laughing. Leo snorted as I held onto him tightly. "Don't judge me dude, I'm scared of heights." He laughed.
When we landed, I nudged Leo, who had slowly been drifting off the entire journey. We landed right in the centre of the green.
The camp alarm went off. The conch horn blew. All the satyrs ran around screaming. Half the camp ran out of their cabins in a mixture of pyjamas and armour. Leo yelled, "it's cool! Don't shoot!" Hesitantly the archers lowered their bows, the rest of the demigods backed away and lowered their spears and swords slightly, but they kept them out and ready in case of a surprise attack. They made a loose ring around the metal dragon.
Some demigods hid behind doors or peeked through windows, I noticed Drew in particular cowering behind Lacey, another Aphrodite kid. It was clear nobody wanted to get close to the dragon. Festus reared his head and shot fire into the sky. Campers scrambled away and hefted their weapons. Leo slid off the dragons back and I followed, Leo raised his arms as if in surrender. "People of Earth, we come in peace!" He shouted, grinning. "Festus is just saying hello."
"That thing is dangerous!" An Ares girl yelled, brandishing her spear. "Kill it now!"
"Stand down!" Someone ordered. To my surprise I saw that the person who had given the order was Jason, who was now emerging from the crowd closely followed by Nyssa and Annabeth. I glanced at Annabeth and smiled, she just stared at me in a way that said, 'why do you always pull the craziest things?'
Jason gazed up at the dragon and shook his head in amazement, "Leo, what have you done?"
"Found us a ride!" Leo beamed. "You said I could go on the quest if I got you a ride. Well, I got you a class-A metallic, flying, bad boy! Festus can take us anywhere."
"It – has wings," Nyssa stammered. Her jaw looked like it might drop off her face.
"Yeh!" Leo said. "Anwen found them and I re-attached them." I turned to face him; he shot me a look that said, 'just go with it'. "We repaired his circuits, too, mostly, so he won't go haywire anymore."
"Mostly?" Nyssa said.
The dragon tilted it's head and oil poured out of his ear, I jumped out of the way, Leo, however, got covered in the stuff.
"Just a few kinks to work out." Leo said. I snorted.
"But how did you survive? The fire breath..." Nyssa said, looking up at the dragon puzzled.
"Well – " Leo began. I cut him off.
"We're both fast, and I know the forest well." I said quickly.
"And we're lucky," Leo said. "So, am I on this quest or not?" He said, clearly trying to change the subject.
Jason scratched his head. "You named him Festus? You know that in Latin, 'festus' means 'happy'? You want us to ride off to save the world on Happy the Dragon?"
I laughed quietly. The dragon twitched and shuddered and flapped his wings.
"That's a yes, bro!" Leo said. "Now, uhm, I'd really suggest we get going, guys. I already picked up some supplies in the – uhm, in the woods. And all these people with weapons are making Festus nervous."
Jason frowned, "But we haven't planned anything, we can't just – "
"Go." Annabeth said. She was the only one who didn't look at all nervous. Her expression was sad and wistful. Maybe she missed our quests more than she let on. "Jason you've only got three days until the Winter Solstice, and you should never keep a nervous dragon waiting." She said glancing at me, be careful, she mouthed, I nodded.
Jason nodded before smiling at Piper, "You ready partner?"
Piper looked up at the dragon. "You bet."
Hi, I know I said I wouldn't update again today but uhm. Well here we are.
I really need to work on chapter names but for now they are staying how they are. As of right now, no one has read this story and honestly I don't expect anyone to, so at this point there isn't much point in writing this. However I'm not doing this for the reads, I'm doing it because I think it will be a fun experience.
So if you are reading this, then hi, I hope you are having a good day and I hope you like the story so far.
Bye from Corgi
P.S. Yes I'm doing this. All characters (apart from Anwen) belong to Rick Riordan, this is simply a fanfiction based of the Heroes of Olympus series.
