Austin's POV
Marie says "so, you're the reason I haven't seen my grandson in over a month. Tell me, what do you do with your life? Where are you going? Where are you from?" I say "well, I'm a dancer and I'm going to major in dance with a focus in education. I hope to be a dance teacher and one day own my own company. I'm from eastern New Hampshire. I'm like three hours from here. I plan to go to UNH and that's about an hour from Harvard and half an hour from home which will be the most important places to me in the next school year."She says "UNH is just a beautiful campus. I'm glad you see my grandson past this summer. How long have you been together?" I say "over a month now" smiling and she says "you love him don't you?" I say "of course I do. He's just I don't even know. Eric is just wonderful. He's very intelligent and motivated and I love spending time with him. Just a beautiful soul really."
She smiles saying "he's a good man and always has been. He's much more mature than kids his age and he thinks differently than everyone else. I'd hate for that to go to waste on someone." I say "I wouldn't let him waste his time on me. He wouldn't waste his time with me cause that's not how he is. I love him and I want to keep him for myself forever, but I know that he knows what he's capable of and if I'm dragging him down, he's not gonna keep me."
Marie nods and I say "he's very fascinating and I know he's too smart to waste his time on anything that's not worth it to him." Marie says "I like you. That girl that Leo brought to me years ago never recognized his smarts or anything any of us see about him. She was telling me oh he's nice and stuff like that. She clearly liked him for his looks."
I say "I'll be honest, very attractive family but that is not the only reason I like Eric" us chuckling. She says "he's a very intelligent man and I've wondered why he's waited so long to bring someone around. Now I know why. He was waiting for someone to show up." I chuckle saying "I think that's the best way to do it." Eric comes in with his shirt over his shoulder and brushes his hand over my shoulders. He grabs a bottle of water from the fridge and says "these cookies are awesome. The smell of chocolate increases Theta brain waves, triggering relaxation."
I say "I did not know that." Eric says "it also releases phenethylamine and serotonin which increases libido but I don't need to be saying that in front of my grandmother." He tosses his shirt over my shoulder and I bite my lip saying "go mow the lawn" chuckling and rolling my eyes. Eric winks at me and goes to the door. Marie says "have fun with all the neighbors coming out on their porches to come watch you." Eric says "I don't care. I'm not worried about old ladies wanting to pinch my cheeks. I have no interest."
He goes outside and I say "he's funny" and Marie says "he's something that's for sure. Who are you going to visit after me?" I say "heard something about an aunt Jen? He implied I had something to worry about with her." Marie says "well, she is learning to put it nicely. Her daughter, my granddaughter, came out to me before her own mother." I say "how does this make sense cause you're from an older generation where being gay or anything of the sort was unacceptable? You're more accepting than her mom it sounds like."
Marie says "she can't really separate the church from her own independent thoughts. Whatever they say or do is what she thinks. Her husband goes and I made a deal with her that her kids are at an age where they should decide to go themselves rather than be forced to go. She doesn't always follow that and I know that. I go to the same church and I see my granddaughter who does not believe in god whatsoever. My granddaughter has a beautiful mind. She thinks very similarly to Eric but she's more into logic and theorizing rather than science and fact. She wants everyone's point of view on something before she forms an opinion when Eric thinks whether it's right or wrong based on hard proof. It really opens your mind the more you talk to either of them."
I say "interesting. If she says anything I'm not gonna hesitate. I hope you have learned that about me." She says "I know you wouldn't, Eric wouldn't either. My granddaughter told Eric too and he'd do anything to protect her from anything." I smile saying "he's a good guy." She says "he really is and I'd hate to see him waste all the goodness about him on anyone maybe other than you." She winks at me and I smile saying "it means a lot to me for his family to like me. It really does. It's really nice meeting you."
Marie says "come by anytime, sweetie. Eric really likes you." I smile and we talk for awhile then Eric comes inside all sweaty saying "his grandmothers neighbors coming in the house 'to see her.' Eric smiles at me saying "I'm going to dry off, I'll be back" and I smile saying "ok." He takes his shirt off my shoulder and goes off to the bathroom. The women come and sit at the table and one of them says "who's this cutie?" I say "I'm Austin" smiling and one of them say "he's adorable."
Marie says "he is" and the same woman says "Marie, your grandson has grown into a fine young man. Does he have a girlfriend?" Eric's grandmother says "he does not" winking at me. I smirk and another woman says "oh good, I've been flirting a bit. I'd get in trouble with his girlfriend." They're all giggling and I chuckle then Eric comes back with his shirt on and he says "what are you all giggling about?" I say "you" chuckling and he says "that's expected I guess. I have another fact about chocolate." I say "what's the rating cause you aren't just talking to me."
Eric says "probably R or X rated. I'll tell you later." One of the women say "tell us, sweetie." Eric says "I'm not saying that in front of my grandmother and her friends" chuckling. One of the women say "so Eric, heard you graduated top of your class. Where are you going for college?" Eric says "I'm going to Harvard" and another says "really? My husband who passed went there." I mumble "flaunting singleness, very smooth." Eric says "I'm sorry for your loss, that must've been painful" and reaches over my shoulder to grab a plate and starts washing it.
I say "I could've handed that to you." Eric says "yeah, I didn't want to ask" squeezing my shoulder. I chuckle saying "ok" and he washes the plate then sits down at the end of the table next to me. Eric says "so, grammy, what do you think?" She says "of the lawn or this cutie you brought to me?" Eric says "well, both, but he's my top priority. You know I do a good job with the lawn." Marie chuckles saying "I like him. He's cute and I enjoyed talking to him. If you love him, just go for it, Eric. When it comes to him, don't care what anyone says to you."
