Eric's POV
Seven years later
I sigh, tightening my tie, and walk into Austin's old school to talk about what I saw when I oversaw their productions. I'm being so underpaid for this position it's ridiculous but John needed a favor. As a business manager, I've been freelance since I left school, I over see people's productions in the work place and tell them what they need to improve on to get more business flow or profit or anything of the source. The parents had a problem with the school and how they do certain things. I went in to find the problem and make a plan for them to combat it.They are, by law, supposed to listen to what I say and go through with it in this meeting. I walk into the school and a few kids stare at me. I hear a "wow, hey, daddy." I smirk, knowing it's not Austin. I nod at the guys and I go to the room I'm supposed to meet with all the superiors of the school in it. I say "Johnathon, looking good, babe" and he shakes my hand saying "hearty handshake. You look good too, Eric. You been lifting more lately?" I say "been putting the protein to it more than usual. You know how it is."
John says "alright, get on with it." I say "ok, hi everyone I am Eric, I've been a freelance business manager for the past year. I graduated top of my class and summa cum laude from Harvard Business School. You all are required to sign off on that you will take whatever I say and put it into affect because what I say to change is either a business violation or discriminatory against a group or people." I hand out the sheets and they all read then sign and they give me the papers back.
I say "ok, so we're covering things to make the best environment here for everyone. The few basics to a business having a successful environment is inclusivity, Human Resources, and finances. Those are all things this school needs to work on." The headmaster says "are you sure what you're saying is correct?" He has not liked me since I got here. I say "god, I know what I'm saying. I went to Harvard and I am being greatly underpaid for this type of job. If you listen to me, you might get even more people wanting to send their kids here. I wouldn't send my kids here."
I sigh then I say "now, since I owe John a favor, I'm doing a job worth double what you're paying me for you. I have some suggestions. First, you want to change how you use your finances. This is a school, so the money should be for the safety of the kids first then the money should go toward the kids. You have enough money here to hire ten hit men for several hits each. If you shift the money right, the kids wouldn't even have to buy their backpacks every year. I'll have a financial advisor come in to write a financial plan for you. He works for me, so I'll pay him but he'll also give you a price to pay him. He's certified and everything."
The headmaster says "what's his credentials." I say "he's been a certified financial advisor for two years. He got certified when he got his degree and he's had a lot of experience. He's very good at what he does. Back to business. Second, I looked at salaries for staff and faculty and I made a new model. It is based on credentials and veteran status, not just veteran status. I saw some teachers with PhDs who get paid the same as the physical education first year teacher which is highly disrespectful. Do you know how long it takes to get a PhD? Ten years. I can't believe this was happening. I'm surprised you still have this diverse of a teaching community here with that going on."
The headmaster says "we really have to change that?" I say "you signed a paper saying you would. Third, you need a short term Human Resources person working here to regulate everyone because after changing so much it starts to turn heads of teachers and you want everyone to settle into it easily. HR will help move it along easily. You can afford to higher someone with five or less years of experience which would suffice. You need to keep them for at least a year till your next overview then the next person or myself will decide if you can carry on a steady program without HR personnel. Any questions before I go onto my next point?"
John says "how would we go about hiring an Human Resources person?" I say "finding a freelance HR is pretty easy, you just have to go on a hiring website. They aren't hard to find. I'd also talk to a local college, there's a lot of people in Human Resources that wouldn't be terrible to get straight out of school. Especially since it's only a temporary position fill." The headmaster says "would we have to pay them?"
I say "obviously. I will let the financial advisor know to put away a paycheck for the HR person. Anyway, fourth, you need a psychologist for students who is hired, not by the school, but by a medical facility. Fifth, and final, you need to have an inclusivity unit for every year of school here. I swear I've heard there was going to be one years ago. Where the hell did it go or was there ever going to be one?!" The headmaster says "there was never going to be one."
I say "yes there was, I was here when it was supposed to happen when I was in high school seven years ago! This is just obscene. While I'm here, you work for me, and my jobs not done till these things are put into place. If we work on all this stuff, we can get it done in two weeks. Go team." The headmaster says "did you go to school here?" I say "no, my partner did though." John says "Eric" and I say "yeah?" He says "what do you have for food at your house? Aaron told me to go shopping."
I say "you don't make sense. Y'all can come over if you want. I don't know what I have but you can do whatever" chuckling. John says "I love that we're family now." I say "so you can mooch off of me? I love it too" rolling my eyes. Austin comes in saying "boys" and I say "hey." Austin says "Aaron told me to come in to drag you out if you've been here for more than an hour." I say "he's a police officer, he's trained to drag people out of places." Austin says "he said you'd listen to me, so we wouldn't have any problems" crossing his arms.
I say "he's right" and John says "where's my kid?" I say "with Aaron, you think I'd leave her in my car?!" John says "you're forgetful sometimes." Austin says "yet you trust me to watch your daughter. Funny how this works. Don't kill each other, I'm going to dunkin, bye." John says "don't give my daughter caffeine!" Austin says "sorry, what?! Cant hear you!" I chuckle and John says "I'm in for it tonight." The headmaster says "was that Austin?" I say "yeah" and the headmaster says "I haven't seen him in years. How's he doing?" I say "I'm here to do my job, not talk about him."
