Austin's POV
Eric says "thanks, Grammy. I knew I could trust your opinion a bit more than dads." Marie says "well, your father is protecting you. I know you are grown up and don't need that from me anymore, so I tell you whether he's a good enough for you or not." One of the older ladies at the table say "hold on, we said he was single earlier. Am I missing something?" Eric says "you told them I was single?"I say "no, they asked if you had a girlfriend and we were having some fun, so we just said no without specifying." Eric chuckles saying "I'm glad you're having fun I guess?" I smile saying "I was." Eric says "I'm not looking forward to seeing Aunt Jen, any pointers?" I say "Eric, if you're dreading it then why do you not want to go?" One of the older ladies say "what's wrong, dear?" Another one says "you can come home with me instead."
They all giggle including me and Eric says "she acts like she's accepting of me and it seems legit, but I know she wouldn't accept her own daughter which pisses me off. I just want to take her away but she still loves her mom in some way. It's difficult but I know I should go see everyone there still." I say "Eric, we will figure it out when we get there. I know it's hard but we know the priorities of a situation like this. If something happens, we know what to do. She's family and you may not like it, but you have to pretend to like it till you have a reason as to why you don't like it. Right now, there's no proof. Yes?"
Eric sighs saying "yes. Would it be ok if we stayed here tonight?" All the women say "yes" and I chuckle saying "you all are very bold. I thought Eric was bold. Damn." Marie says "of course you can and if Angela does too, she can." Eric stands up saying "are you ready to go?" I say "I'm ready when you are." Eric says "bye, Grammy, I love you" hugging her and she says "I love you too, sweetie." She stands up says "take care of that angel for me, dear" hugging me. I say "I will. I'll see you later" smiling and Eric says "bye, ladies" smiling.
They all say "bye, Eric" giggling and he opens the door for me, his hand resting on my lower back as he shuts the door behind himself. I say "those ladies are funny" and Eric says "they are" us chuckling. We get in the car and he starts the drive to his aunts house. He says "whatever happens, if anything, Angela is my priority over you. I feel it's necessary to make it clear." I say "yes, she is your priority, you're my priority, and I'm no one's priority because this doesn't involve me."
Eric says "I love you." He pecks my lips and I say "I love you too" and we go inside. Eric says "aunt Jen!" She says "hey, how are you?" They hug and Eric says "I'm good. How are you?" She says "I'm good, Angela causing trouble as always." Eric says "what do you mean causing trouble?" Jen says "just the usual, she just doesn't listen to me. I'll tell her to come out of her room and she doesn't unless she has a reason to." Eric says "that's a teenager thing, I went through a phase similar to that." I say "I did too."
Jen says "I don't get it and I don't care to understand it. Come sit, I want to hear about your life." We sit down at the table and Eric says "well, life's pretty good. I have a boyfriend, I graduated, I'm going to an Ivy League for school, and I'm just living the good life this summer. I'll be working and driving most of the summer." Jen says "that's good that you're working. Full time?" Eric says "as full time as I get. Probably a thirty hour week give or take."
She says "that's good, I'm happy for you. I'm Jen by the way" and she shakes my hand when I say "I'm Austin" smiling. A girl runs down the stairs saying "oh hey Eric" smiling and she comes down and sits next to him. She hugs him saying "hi, I'm Angela." They both have their hands on the table when she sits down. I say "I'm Austin" smiling and we just wave. Eric and Angela are just tapping away on the table. I look at Eric's hands and I figure that it's Morse code.
Whatever they feel comfortable with, I'm gonna let them go and not ask questions. Eric talks with Jen as he taps out things to Angela and she says "so are you working this summer, Austin?" I say "I'm a dancer, so I'm teaching a hip hop intensive over the summer. This is our last week together, so Eric and I are seeing family and spending time together before we go back to not seeing each other so much." She says "how lovely, so can I get you anything to drink?"
Eric says "can you get me a glass of water?" I smile and she says "so, Eric, have you met any nice girls? Perhaps someone also going to Harvard?" I mumble "you said we were together over the phone right?" He says "sure did" under his breath and he then quickly changes the subject saying "Angela, you want to go to grams for the night? She was telling me she wanted to see you. We could go out to breakfast in the morning?" Angela says "mom can I go?" She says "sure, sweetie" and Eric and Angela keep tapping on the table.
Jen says "oh I got you something, I'll go grab it." She goes downstairs and Angela says "you are a literal godsend. I need help figuring something out." Eric says "what's up?" Angela says "I want to learn how to moonwalk but I can't get it." Eric laughs saying "I'm good at figuring things out but I haven't figured that's me out." I say "I can teach you" and she says "really?" I say "yeah, it's a good party trick" and we stand up and I kick my shoes off.
I say "so, pop a heel then you drag your flat foot back then pop your heel and drag your foot back." Eric says "have you done this on a stage before?" I say "as much as I hate to admit it, I sure have." Angela tries it and I say "very good, it just takes practice on how to remember it. Pretty soon you'll be able to do it in heels" us chuckling. Angela says "should I go get my stuff." Eric says "yeah, I want to leave before your mom can take anymore cheap shots at me."
I smile and she runs upstairs and Eric pecks my lips then his aunt comes back. She says "I thought I'd get you some stuff just to make your schooling a bit cheaper. Your mother gave me a list of stuff you needed, so I thought I'd buy it for you." Eric says "this is awesome, thanks, Jen" and they hug. She says "you're welcome" and Angela comes back downstairs. Eric says "well, I think we're gonna get going. It was nice seeing you" smiling and Jen says "of course. It was nice seeing you too."
She walks us out and says "Eric, you have got to start thinking about settling down with a nice girl. You're getting older and you have to get married soon." Eric takes a deep breath and opens my door for me saying "I love you." I say "I love you too. Just ignore her or she's not gonna let Angela leave with you. Priorities, Eric." He sighs saying "priorities" shutting my door and he says "I'll see you, Aunt Jen."
